Vice President, Manufacturing and Quality

Pacific Biosciences is seeking a talented, driven, well-rounded and experienced manufacturing executive to lead our instrument, reagent and SMRT Cell Manufacturing efforts and Quality teams in Menlo Park, California. The ideal candidate will be a professional with experience in leading a world-class manufacturing environment, as well as the have ability to work cross-functionally with Research, Development and other teams.  They must also have experience in all aspects of manufacturing management, strong interpersonal skills for dealing with all levels of the organization, project management skills, and the technical skills and experience necessary for managing Pacific Biosciences diverse manufacturing activities. 

The qualified candidate has: 

  • Demonstrated the ability to pursue innovative solutions based on an accurate assessment of business and technical requirements. 

  • Demonstrated the ability to develop and scale manufacturing capabilities to meet or exceed all industry, regulatory, and customer requirements relating to cost, quality, and responsiveness. 

  • Demonstrated the ability to implement and run continuous improvement programs on systems deployed to keep them current and relevant. 

  • A willingness and ability to smoothly transition between a hands-on, willing to get my hands dirty mode and a senior management delegation and empowerment mode and back as circumstances dictate. 

This position reports to the Chief Financial Officer/Chief Operating Officer. 

As VP of Manufacturing and Quality the candidate will be accountable for: 


  • Drive the development and adoption of a three-year strategic Manufacturing Plan including supply chain, subcontracting, and outsourcing. 

  • Play an active role in senior-level negotiations with key suppliers and manufacturing partners to continue to secure critical components in the supply chain. 

  • Work with the Development team to establish strategies for the smooth transition of new products from Development into Manufacturing. 

  • Play an active role in working with Finance, Quality, and Program Management to maintain systems compliance with Sarbanes Oxley, and ISO requirements.

  • Ensure regulatory compliance of all products and all divisions across the company.


  • Optimize and effectively leverage resources. Drive continuous improvement. 

  • Work closely with the Finance group on manufacturing plans, goals, and future product innovations and successfully manage OCOGS in product transitions.

  • Develop and manage budgeting and budget execution. 

  • Direct all production control, purchasing, and shipping/receiving activities including outsourcing and subcontracting to ensure that company business needs are met. 

  • Develop ongoing programs with a focus on reducing product cost while increasing product quality and on time delivery.

  • Maintain ISO 9001 and 13485 certifications for the site and foster a culture of continuous improvement.

  • Maintain/implement proper process control of the operations to meet business needs and customers quality expectations.


  • Establish and manage the departments budget including expenses, capital, cost/benefit analysis, and cost benefit of key hires.

  • Provide strong management leadership. Ability to roll-out strategic/business goals and enforce accountability.  Manage employees and hands-on operation of the companys manufacturing functions.

  • Mentor and cross train staff members and foster a healthy team environment through coaching, performance management, career development, and allocation and prioritization of work. 

  • Find, develop, promote and retain high potential individuals in leadership roles.

  • Ability to use strategic talent across all three product lines.

  • Develop staff core competencies in anticipation of business needs through training of existing staff and recruitment of candidates with required skill sets as appropriate. 

  • Develop and champion structured Product Development disciplines within Manufacturing. 

  • Explore possibilities of Value Engineering within the current product lines.


  • Work proactively with R&D to be involved as early as possible in product development activities and play as large a role as practical in supporting engineering builds of new prototypes, and access to the correct supplier base.

Position Requirements: 

  • A minimum of 10-years leadership experience in manufacturing in a certified ISO manufacturing organization.

  • Ability to initiate, implement, assess and improve current operation programs for efficiencies and cost-effectiveness.

  • Experience managing both Instrumentation and Consumables manufacturing is highly desired (razor/razor blade business model).

  • Experience in managing Supply Chain, from planning through purchasing, negotiation and administration of multimillion-dollar procurement agreements. 

  • Established relationships with the full range of worldwide sub-contract manufacturers and familiarity with their capabilities, pricing strategies, and negotiation tactics. 

  • Success deploying commercial products into high-volume production with fast time-to-market and cost-sensitivity requirements. 

  • Self-starter and a team player that will thrive in an entrepreneurial environment. 

  • Large- and small-company experience, ideally in leading manufacturing in a rapid-growth environment. 

  • A proven track record of delivering on commitments within timeline and budget. 

  • Experience in a company whose products are moved through multiple distribution channels, knowledge of Camstar, Agile, SAP, and Salesforce a plus.

  • Proven track record in successfully identifying opportunities and delivering, resulting in lower costs and improved quality.

  • Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills and creating effective working relationships.

  • Excellent written and oral skills. Articulate and persuasive with executive presence. 

  • Strong mentoring, team building and alignment skills with the ability to drive new concepts. Strong facilitation and collaboration skills. 

  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills. Routinely engages in independent thought and judgment in developing methods, techniques and evaluation criteria. 

  • Knowledge of Lean principals a strong plus.

  • Strong knowledge of statistical quality control.

  • A clear understanding of quality, regulatory standards is required.

  • Technical degree a must, preferably a BS in Engineering or Biotechnology with an MBA or equivalent experience.
