**Providence is calling a Transition Monitor (Providence Learning Institute, Day Shift, 1.0 FTE, 40 hours per week) to Providence Alaska Medical Center in Anchorage, Alaska. We are a community of caregivers delivering every day on our Mission to provide compassionate care that is accessible for all - especially those who are poor and vulnerable.**
**In this position you will:**
+ Execute on a comprehensive mentoring program:
+ Serves as the central regional / facility Clinical Academy contact for a group of 30-50 fellows / residents. As such it is the primary regional, boots on the ground role to ensure success.
+ Meets every two-three weeks with fellows / residents and provides coaching / mentoring throughout the program. This work entails mentoring residents and fellows during the period when they are most likely to leave the first 90-120 days.
+ Mentoring will entail advising on clinical, people, and curriculum issues and supporting and advocating for them across these areas.
+ In order to mentor residents, the Transition Mentor must have strong clinical, education, and organizational skills and experience in synthesizing these elements into a comprehensive mentorship program.
+ Coordinate the triad relationship between resident / fellow, preceptor, and manager:
+ Responsible for convening manager, preceptor, and residents to ensure alignment of program and individual expectations, ensure managers are aware of activities and can support from a people management perspective, and that all parties needs are met.
+ Must influence managers and preceptors (without people management authority) to change behaviors and practices to ensure excellent development, mentoring, and precepting for new residents and fellows.
+ The role will need to coach managers on how to change their mentoring / development approach for clinicians going through the Clinical Academy, as these individuals will need more support than traditional experience nurses (as they are new nurses or new to specialty).
+ Formally train residents / fellows and preceptors:
+ Formally train residents / fellows as needed in specialty and general nursing fundamentals.
+ This requires the role be able to come up to speed on areas that may be outside of traditional experience. This includes preceptor training, core content (fundamentals of nursing), and high level concepts in Medical-Surgical, Telemetry, Emergency Department, Critical Care, Perioperative, and Labor & Delivery.
+ Train preceptors (including refresher training) on system Clinical Academy preceptor role with a focus on best practice preceptor skills.
+ Partner with HR, IS, and other Nursing colleagues to ensure excellent orientation and on-boarding support for new Clinical Academy and other nursing new hires. As such the role has to have both clinical expertise and a core understanding of HR and IS orientation and on boarding best practices.
+ Able to facilitate logistics and also identify ways to improve these activities to ensure they serve the needs of residents/ fellows.
+ Ensure preceptor mentoring activities align with residency / fellowship curriculum and best practices:
+ Ensure individual preceptor work aligns with residency / fellowship curriculum. This is key to ensure we have the same experience regardless of geography. This will require experience and / or knowledge in navigating across (potentially) multiple union environments.
+ Share best practices from other preceptors and other regions / facilities. This requires the ability to take local practice and put into broader system and regional perspective and to advocate for what is clinically, developmentally, and ethically correct.
+ Coach preceptors and provide educational resources as needed. Identify the need for refresher preceptor training and coordinate with regional / facility Director to ensure execution. This requires clinical and business acumen to coach experienced preceptor nurses whose practice may not align with industry best practices.
+ Serve as the regional / facility link to system Clinical Academy leadership:
+ Work with Clinical Academy system leadership (including Clinical Academy Director and System Transition to Practice Manager) and other regional / facility Transition Mentors to share best practices and align with program changes based on lessons learned across the system.
+ This requires the ability to place regional practices in the context of system standards, identify variances and best practices, and ability to advocate for change in areas that colleagues care deeply about and often have vested interests in maintaining.
+ Serves as a professional role model for staff, demonstrating creativity, vision, insight, energy, and commitment, supporting the mission of the organization, adherence to Core Values, and fostering operational and financial success in service to those in need.
+ Performs personnel oversight activities including hiring, transfer, discharge, disciplinary actions and performance evaluations.
**Required qualifications for this position include:**
+ Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) from fully accredited program
+ Active, unencumbered Registered Nurse (RN) licensure in California, Washington, Oregon, Montana, Alaska, New Mexico, and/or Texas
+ 8 years in nursing or equivalent experience in a related field
+ 2 years demonstrated background mentoring nurses and working in a matrixed environment.
**Preferred qualifications for this position include:**
+ Masters degree in nursing or equivalent and relevant graduate degree
+ Advanced certifications in nursing
+ 2 years educator experience.
+ 1 year leadership experience.
+ 1 year simulation (high-fidelity and low-fidelity) experience.
+ 1 year demonstrated experience and excellence in nursing education and professional development.
