As a part of OptumCare, the largest network of medical groups in the nation, MedExpress On-Site Solutions is seeking a full-time Well Medical Director to join our team in Minnetonka, MN. At Optum, we are transforming healthcare nationally while providing Physician-led care locally.


Position Highlights:

Administrative Activities

  • Work collaboratively with medical and clinical leadership to align care delivery at the onsite primary care clinics.

  • Support the onsite clinic strategy and design.

  • In conjunction with the Chief Medical Officer and VP of Medical Operations On-Site Solutions, assists in the research, development, and writing or revising of new or existing policies, protocols, and practice guidelines related to patient care and medical provider employment in the on-site clinic space.

  • Develop primary care specific order sets and templates in EMR System

  • May lead in obtaining and maintaining ambulatory care center third party accreditation to include, but not limited to, developing and implementing a quality improvement program, establishing and coordinating exchange of relevant patient information within the guidelines of HIPPA with local healthcare organizations and obtaining and analyzing performance data.

  • Assist in the implementation of all MedExpress policies and procedures as they pertain to patient care and provider employment.

  • Organize, direct, and integrate practices to assure continued compliance with applicable State and Federal laws governing employer health services including worker's compensation.

  • Participate in site review by State, Federal, or other regulatory agencies.

  • Organize, direct, and integrate the medical arm of On-Site Solutions with other departments within the MedExpress organization.

  • Maintain an effective working and interpersonal relationship with medical colleagues, administrative personnel, hospital systems, and patients in order to achieve maximum operational effectiveness and customer satisfaction.

  •  Mediate professional disagreements.

  • Participate in MedExpress marketing activities.

  • Participate in recruiting, interviewing, and hiring processes.

  • Participate in patient satisfaction projects as developed by MedExpress.

  • In conjunction with the VP of Medical Operations On-Site Solutions, assists in developing and meeting budgetary and performance goals.

  • Develop, oversee, and participate in projects that ensure the cost-effectiveness of care provided by medical providers and centers.

  • Attend local and national meetings and conferences to remain current regarding issues relevant to the performance of duties.

  • Interface with clients to review clinical operations and reports.

  • Participate in RFP responses and finalist presentations.

Operational Efficiency of Clinical Operations

  • Assess and manage clinical operational capability in medical management.

  • Assist the Practice Manager On-Site Solutions in organizing, directing, and implementing provider staffing and scheduling following set labor model guidelines, ensuring efficient productivity as well as providing adequate medical personnel to render care to patients and meet the needs of clients.

  • Remain up to date on issues pertaining to On-site clinic clients, proper billing procedures, and documentation guidelines.

  • Promote provider support for diagnostic and E&M coding accuracy, adherence with the corporate compliance plan, and attainment of productivity targets.

  • Foster collaborative relationships with employers, and community medical practitioners so as to meet goals set by MedExpress and promote the high quality On-site Clinic Services the organization offers and enhance the quality and convenience of patient care.

Medical Staff Supervision, Evaluation, and Development

  • Supervising physician and manager of MedExpress providers at Optum On-Site clinics and UHG Medical Weight Loss Program. 

  • Utilize the processes set forth in the Provider Evaluation and Development Program including, but not limited to, participating in formal orientation of new providers, provide professional oversight for staff physicians, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants.

  • Serve as a mentor for providers needing assistance in the On-site clinic space.

  • Monitor compliance with MedExpress treatment guidelines, policies, and protocols.

  • Assure that the quality and appropriateness of patient care are monitored and evaluated and that appropriate actions based on findings are taken on a consistent basis. 

  • Report quality of care issues promptly to appropriate individuals, including CMO and VP of Medical Operations On-Site Solutions.

  • Identify and correct deficiencies in medical policies, protocols, and guidelines utilizing performance improvement processes in conjunction with Human Capital partners. 

  • Evaluate and report the effectiveness of corrective actions resulting from performance improvement processes.

  • In conjunction with training and onboarding, provide new provider orientation; train or provide adequate training for all providers; coach, counsel, and motivate providers; evaluate providers; investigate complaints or performance concerns; implement disciplinary actions and termination processes when appropriate and in consultation with Human Resources and Medical Leadership. 

Management of Quality of Medical Care

  • Make clinical decisions related to the provision of care.

  • Manage, influence, and deliver communications of clinical decisions programs, cases and outcomes.

  • Participate in Risk Management activities.

  • Monitor patterns and appropriateness of specialist, diagnostic, and other referrals.

  • Organize, implement, and direct a quality improvement system incorporating quality outcome measures.

  • Develop and update medical care protocols and procedures.

  • Develop and provide oversight of quality improvement studies.

  • Serve as laboratory director for CLIA accreditation.

  • Collaborate in the development of a continuing medical education policy and assures oversight of compliance, including actively assisting in the management of timely completion of annual compliance and other required trainings.

  • Participate in review of patient satisfaction surveys.

  • Participate in Peer Review and Root Cause Analyses as necessary

  • Oversee patient issues and concerns related to their medical care; taking steps to resolve patient complaints and likewise takes actions for patient dismissal if appropriate.

  • May be required to participate in after-hours and weekend call schedules.

Delivery of Patient Care

  • Responsible for providing exceptional treatment and communication of care options to every MedExpress patient.

  • Demonstrate mastery of all MedExpress and UHG medical policies, procedures, and treatment guidelines.

  • Oversee the telemedicine oversite program pertaining to the worksites; working in collaboration with medical operations team and the Chief Medical Officer.

  • Ensure the On-site clinics are providing the highest level of clinical quality to include wellness care, health risk appraisal/assessment, preventative care, acute illness/injury care, and chronic disease management.

  • While on call, a practitioner may need to address a patient's concerns over the phone. Whenever the practitioner is on-call, it implies that his/her duties can be requested anytime.  On call schedule will vary depending of site. 

Supervising Physician of Medical Weight Loss Program

  • Provide education and training on Obesity Medicine, lead program enhancement, published literature, and provide guidance on outcome evaluation. 

  • Provide virtual medical weight loss services at the partial service Well clinics and onsite Health Care Advisor clinics.

  • Provide medical oversight of all patients in the medical weight loss program.

  • Conduct routine case reviews/audits as well as periodic as required and follow-up with any corrective action or coaching to assure the highest level of care and documentation is delivered

  • Lead and/or participate in Medical Weight Loss care conferences as scheduled.

Community Outreach

  • Serves as liaison to medical community-at-large.

  • Assures consistency of community awareness of MedExpress, Optum, and UHG mission, vision, and values.

  • Participates in community outreach activities as requested by administration.

  • Lead meetings with clients.

  • Travel up to 50% of the time.
