BASIC FUNCTION: 
Under the direction of the director of the pharmacy, pharmacy operations manager, and clinical pharmacy manager, performs various functions in preparation, dispensing, packaging and drug distribution.  Maintains pertinent records according to legal requirements and/or hospital and departmental policy.  Complies and computes medication charges and credits.

SUPERVISORY ACCOUNTABILITY:  None

NATURE AND SCOPE: 
Interacts and communicates with pharmacy staff, pharmacy management, and various hospital departments to include department nursing staff.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES: 
Supports the mission, vision and values of the hospital.

Responsible for working in a safe and protective manner at all times, keeping in mind that safety and environmental hazards are the responsibility of all employees for themselves, other staff members and patients.

Receives medication orders and follows proper preparation protocols for review/inspection by the pharmacist.

Follows specific guidelines set by manufacturer for processing drugs for replacement or credit or gives to person in charge of returns.

Prepares large and small volume intravenous fluids, is capable of mixing hyperalimentation as outlined in tasks and duties.

Conducts a complete and thorough drug inventory of their section in a timely fashion.  Restocks, organizes, maintains dispensing bins, floor stock carts and delivers contents to patient care areas according to schedule.

Reconciles shipment of medications received against medications ordered.  Transmits wholesale drug orders and returns daily.

Maintains records for inpatients, including DEA records and charges and credits under supervision of the pharmacist.

Delivers drug carts, piggy back medication and large volume IV’s to each nursing unit.  Gives priority to refrigerated items, scheduled drugs, UPS orders, short dated items and medications needed for AM delivery.

Replaces outdated medication, increases or decreases levels and suggests adding or deleting items based on usage.

Transports pharmacy related items to and from other pharmacies when need arises.

Maintains pharmacy security by restricting access to pharmacy and drug storage areas to unauthorized individuals.

Is discreet when communicating and interacting appropriately with the patient and/or guardian in order to protect their privacy and ensure confidentiality.

Appropriately treats the patient and other customers with dignity and respects their rights and wishes.

Assists with the orientation and training of new and supportive personnel.

Passes annual competency test.

Attends in-services and is compliant with essential education without prompting from manager.

Performs other duties as assigned.

CORE COMPETENCIES: 
Displays knowledge of drug, i.e., names, dosages, strengths, vendors, cost centers and how often it should be ordered.

Demonstrates appropriate aseptic technique and the principles of USP 797and USP 800.

Demonstrates excellent interpersonal skills to support a positive working environment and adherence to CCIRH pride team values.

Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.

Possess the ability to accurately enter data into the computer and to follow computer work flow.

Pass annual competencies specific to the pharmacy department and job duties.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: 
High School Diploma or equivalent with science courses preferred.

Completion of approved pharmacy tech program.

PC proficiency to include MS Office products.

Current Pharmacy Tech Registration from the board of pharmacy.

Maintain continuing education as required by the board of pharmacy.

Previous experience in a pharmacy department or an institutionalized setting.

Knowledge of medical terminology.
