BASIC FUNCTION: 
The Outpatient Endoscopy Technologist provides care for patients within the outpatient endoscopy center under the direction and supervision of the registered nurse and/or supervising physician.  The Outpatient Endoscopy Technologist is responsible for the care, handling and processing of specialized equipment associated with gastroenterology showing a strict adherence to aseptic practices and standards of care and infection control guidelines.  The Outpatient Endoscopy Technologist as a member of the team is responsible for optimal patient care; assuring procedures proceed in a timely manner while maintaining patient safety.

NATURE AND SCOPE: 
The Outpatient Endoscopy Technologist will interact daily and communicate with team members, management and medical staff and have frequent external communication with patients, families and volunteers.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES: 
Supports the mission, vision and values of the hospital.

Responsible for working in a safe and protective manner at all times, keeping in mind that safety and environmental hazards are the responsibility of all employees for themselves, other staff members and patients.

Assists the registered nurse in preparing the endoscopy suite for procedures including but not limited to checking equipment and scopes for correct functioning, collecting supplies, and setting up the procedure cart with attention to the type or procedure and requirements of the attending physician.

Contributes to patient safety by example of participating in patient time-out, verifying electrosurgical settings, monitoring stretcher side rails, verifying and labeling patient medications on the field, etc.

Assists during procedure by aiding the physician with the taking of biopsies, removal of polyps, balloon dilation, and other tasks as needed.

Actively assists the registered nurse and physician with identifying, site and type of specimen taken understanding that entire team participation is necessary for patient care and safety.

Rigorously applies the principals of aseptic technique to provide optimal patient care by controlling the location of contaminated instruments, equipment and supplies to provide optimal patient care and prevent the spread of infection based on standards of care and department policy.

Assists with patient positioning and splinting as directed by the registered nurse and/or physician.

Preforms high level disinfection, following manufacturer’s guidelines, standards of care and infection control and departmental policies.

Notifies registered nurse/outpatient endoscopy lead of malfunctioning equipment, labels and removes from service, initiates work order to the appropriate department for repair.

Preforms various duties as needed to support the outpatient operation including the cleaning and maintenance of the work area, procedure rooms, processing rooms, patient rooms and equipment, as well as ordering supplies and tracking scope repairs via facility’s computer systems.

Performs all other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: 
High School Diploma or equivalent required.

Current BLS Certification required from American Heart Association or American Red Cross.

One year recent patient care experience as a GI technician or graduate of an accredited surgical technology school preferred.
