Abbott Molecular has an immediate opening for a Technical Writer - Labeling role in the Des Plaines, IL facility. This individual will be required to prepare technical documents in the forms of Operations manuals, User training guides, safety manuals, troubleshooting guides, labeling, and customer communications for diagnostic/non-diagnostic instruments. 

Major Responsibilities:

- Serves as the Labeling representative on product teams.

- Coordinates all activities related to the preparation and compilation of data and information into a single comprehensive package for new and revised domestic and international Operations manuals, User training guides, safety manuals, troubleshooting guides, labeling, and customer communications for diagnostic/non-diagnostic instruments. 

- Utilizes format/style guidelines established by labeling department.

- Communicates deliverables needed and writing process to team members.

- Obtains relevant product data and information.

- Assesses accuracy of information.  Understands sources of information.

- Uses Abbott molecular documentation systems and databases.

- Determines format for documents. Confirms completeness of information to be presented.

- Challenges conclusions when necessary. Confirms labeling claims are supported by and consistent with data presented.

- Develops format and presentations that enhance the ease with which the information can be understood. Coordinates responses to inquiries, questions, and deficiencies received from reviewers both in the US and internationally. Explains data in a manner consistent with the target audience and regulatory requirements.

- Develops consistent processes related to manual preparation, formats, and content.

- Recommends and implements process improvements.

- Negotiates milestones and due dates based on anticipated product launch dates.

Education:

Bachelor's degree in Science, Engineering, English, or equivalent experience.  American Medical Writers Association (AMWA) certification or Society for Technical Communication (STC) certification is desired. Experience writing in DITA XML or front end encoding is highly desirable.

Background:

Minimum 2 years relevant professional experience, in a related area such as R&D, Technical Product Development, Quality, Regulatory Affairs, Clinical Research, or Medical/Technical Writing.  1-4 years writing experience as a medical/technical writer in the health care industry is preferred.   

Strong written and oral communication skills. Superior attention to detail. Good working knowledge of personal computer software programs in Windows environment (e.g. Adobe Illustrator and Adobe FrameMaker).

Ability to find and correct errors in spelling, punctuation, grammar, consistency, clarity, and accuracy. Proficient in word processing, flow diagrams and spreadsheets. Good communication, interpersonal, and team skills. Ability to critically review own work before sending out for internal/external review by team.
