Job Summary:

Supervises the daily operations of the animal facility sections within the Florida Research and Innovation building.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Supervises daily activities of the animal husbandry staff to include work assignments and work schedules.
  • Assists with hiring, training, performance evaluations and/or veterinary technical and disciplinary actions.
  • Coordinates and monitors staff activities for compliance with regulatory and accrediting institutions.
  • Ensures and supervises the care, comfort, nutrition, and safety provided to research animals housed in the FRI.
  • Supervises the receipt of incoming animals.
  • Performs the duties of an animal care technician or veterinary technician as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.

    Education:

    • High school diploma or equivalent.

      Languages:

      • N/A

        Certifications:

        • Assist Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT), Laboratory Animal Technician (LAT), or Laboratory Animal Technologist (LATG) certifications from American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) or license as a Veterinary Technician (VT)

          Complexity of Work:

          • Requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work with minimal supervision.
          • Must be able to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action.

            Work Experience:

            • Five years of experience in all phases of animal husbandry and technology to include at least two years’ experience as a lead animal husbandry technician or similar leadership role in an animal facility.
            • Experience working with USDA covered species, preferred
            • Experience in breeding rodents, preferred
            • Experience with animal husbandry in a BSL-2/3, preferred

              Physical Requirements:

              • Ability to see, stand, bend, walk, lift, and transport supplies, equipment, and/or animals weighing more than 50 pounds safely.
              • Ability to work in an environment of unpleasant odors and sights, subject to animal bites and scratches.
              • Necessity for completing the job before leaving work.
              • Animal care is a 7-day per week, 365-days per year job.
              • All tasks must be performed to fulfill guidelines and regulations according to regulations.

                • Follows standard precautions using personal protective equipment as required.
