The mission of the Office of Minority Affairs and Diversity (OMA&D) is to create pathways for diverse populations to access postsecondary opportunities, nurture and support their academic success, and cultivate a campus climate that enriches the educational experience for all. OMA&D staff enjoy a fast-paced, mission-oriented work environment noted for its commitment to diversity and excellence. Within OMA&D is the College Access unit that implements programs focused on expanding access for underserved communities by partnering with K-12 school districts, two-year colleges and community coalitions.

The University of Washingtons Upward Bound program started in the 1960s and has been preparing students for college success ever since. UW Upward Bound students are routinely awarded academic scholarships, obtain admission to competitive universities, earn college degrees, and find success in rewarding careers. Through our long-standing partnership with Seattle Public Schools we serve students at Cleveland STEM High School, Franklin High School, and Chief Sealth International High School.  The program was awarded an additional competitive grant and now also serves students at Kent Meridian High School.

The Office of Minority Affairs & Diversity has an outstanding opportunity for a part-time (75% FTE) Study Skills Instructor.

Under the direction of the Upward Bound Director, the Study Skills Instructor provides instruction and tutoring in the following area: English Language Arts; SAT and other standardized test preparation; and academic success skills to 95 high school students in the TRIO Upward Bound program.  Upward Bound is a program that prepares low-income and first-generation students for college enrollment and success. The Study Skills Instructor works primarily at three Seattle high schools: Chief Sealth, Franklin, and Cleveland.

As a member of the Office of Minority Affairs & Diversity College Access team, the Study Skills Instructor will directly contribute to the mission of the organization to create pathways for a diverse population to access postsecondary opportunities.  The majority of Upward Bound students aspire to attend the UW, and the Study Skills Instructor will help the student prepare competitive applications to the UW. The Student Skills Instructor will also represent the organization to public school staff, teachers, and administrators.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Teaching and Tutoring (70%)
Teach two sections of a college preparation course during the Summer Academy, a six-week program held at the University of Washington. This foundational course simulates a senior students year where the focus is on applying and selecting a college or university after graduation.  The course develops students reading, writing, and critical thinking skills.
Provide group and individual tutoring at the high schools to assist students with their academic classes.  Support students in brainstorming, researching, writing, and revision.
In collaboration with the Upward Bound Math instructor, teach an annual eight-session Saturday SAT Test preparation class.
Provide academic support for students that are still acquiring English fluency to be successful in Upward Bound and in their high school classes.
Build and maintain relationships with high school teachers and staff in order to advocate and support the success of UB students.
Offer quarterly workshops afterschool on the writing process, study skills, and test-taking strategies.
In collaboration with the Academic Advisor, support students in revising and writing internship, scholarship, and college application essays.

Academic Assessment (10%)
Using available school data as well as information from student contact identify student academic needs and monitor student progress.
In coordination with the Academic Advisor, contribute to the individual learning plans of each student. Monitor progress based on UB academic performance objectives.

Recordkeeping and Reporting (10%)
Maintain records of student contacts and provide routine reports for the program database and student files.

Recruitment & New Student Orientation Events (5%)
In collaboration with the UB staff, deliver recruitment presentations at target high schools or in the community. Lead workshops at the new student orientation events.
Serve on review group for Upward Bound program applications.
Other duties as assigned (5%)


REQUIREMENTS:
Bachelor's Degree in Education and 3 years of professional, full-time experience (or equivalent part-time experience over multiple years) teaching students with diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, ethnic, and/or disabled backgrounds.

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.

DESIRED EXPERIENCE
Past TRIO participant, and/or bilingual preferred.
Experience with federal regulations and with federal TRIO programs, which support the educational development of low-income, first-generation college attendees, and underrepresented students preferred.
Personal experience overcoming barriers similar to those of the students served by the project preferred.
Understanding of partner schools and communities, and Washington state college access programs and college admission requirements preferred.
Washington State Teacher Certification preferred.
