The University of Washington School of Law is seeking a part time (50% FTE) Staff Attorney for the Moderate Means Program.

The UW Moderate Means Program (MMP) is the flagship pro bono program for students at UW Law and provides legal referrals for low and moderate income individuals as a part of the statewide Washington State Bar Association (WSBA) Moderate Means Program.

Focusing on family, housing and consumer law, the program connects people within 200400% of the Federal Poverty Level to lawyers who offer legal help at reduced fees. Reporting to the Associate Dean for Experiential Education, the Staff Attorney leads the MMP by recruiting, training and supervising students; evaluating case briefs, tracking cases; creating educational materials; and communicating with participating attorneys. The Staff Attorney will work with clinic faculty, students, and pro bono partners to represent clients and manage an active caseload.

The position of Staff Attorney is integral to providing continuity of representation for MMP clients. The Staff Attorney supports program objectives by providing students with training in substantive legal issues, issue-spotting, interview skills, ethics, and the program database.

The Staff Attorney must be admitted to practice law in Washington as a member of the Washington State Bar Association. The Staff Attorney must have strong communication and interpersonal skills to be able communicate appropriately and effectively with clients, attorneys, students, and other organizations in the community.  The Staff Attorney must also possess the ability to exercise sound independent judgment, to maintain client confidences and to meet high standards of ethical professional practice. 

In addition, the Staff Attorney must possess excellent analytic and research skills, the ability to advocate effectively in both oral and written communications, be able to work competently within diverse communities, and be able to effectively manage frequent deadlines. The Staff Attorney must also be able to use or learn a variety of software programs, including Word and Excel, and proprietary case management systems such as the Legal Server database.  Timeliness, strong communication and negotiation skills are essential.


Legal Services
  • Recruit and train students several times a year
  • Provide daily supervision of students
  • Conduct case evaluation and review
  • Work with community partners to place cases
  • Serve as a resource to lawyers, students and interns
  • Work with faculty and students to conduct case evaluation, applying legal principles to fact patterns
  • Work with MMP partners - GU and SU law schools and the WSBA on overall program evaluation and improvement
  • Manage the MMP budget and approve payment of program bills
  • Provide program reports to the WSBA

    Client Intake
  • Conducting case management for the MMP by utilizing specialized legal knowledge to manage workflow and meet the MMPs needs and requirements.
  • Working with students and MMP staff to coordinate and improve case intake, management practices and procedures, maintaining internal case databases, and supporting students and staff to comply with case management best practices.
  • Independently managing client communications, conducting case outreach activities, and assisting in providing updates and other information to MMP staff, students and clients.
  • Review and determine client eligibility.

    Conflict Checks
  • Working with MMP staff to manage the conflict check system by applying applicable rules of professional conduct in evaluating potential conflicts, coordinating and improving conflicts and ethics management practices and procedures, maintaining internal conflicts databases, and supporting students and staff in complying with ethical requirements established by Washington State Bar Association.

    Programmatic Duties
  • Manage MMPs volunteer and intern programs
  • Support MMPs engagement in the legal and non-legal communities to promote education and community awareness of pro bono resources and assist with policy reform and fundraising initiatives.

    File maintenance and Record Keeping
  • Prepare and file documents in compliance with applicable law and court rules, and maintaining hard copy and electronic files and databases.

  • Other duties as assigned


  • Juris Doctor.
  • Admission to the Washington State Bar Association.
  • A strong educational background in the legal areas of housing, consumer, and family law, and/or a minimum of 2 years experience in legal services and the legal areas of housing, consumer and family law.
  • Professional References.

    Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.


  • A strong educational or experiential background in poverty law.
  • A demonstrated history of working with diverse clientele.
