The Business Manager role supports the Clinical Sciences Leadership Team (LT) within the Early Clinical Development (ECD) organization, and serves as a strategic thought partner to help drive functional short-term and long-term business planning, strategy development and execution. This position reports to the Head of Business, Project and Process Management within the ECD Business Operations function.

Key accountabilities and responsibilities include:

  • Embraces an enterprise mindset and is able to connect functional activities to the broader organizational context.

  • Adeptly balances providing space for innovation while creating appropriate boundaries in order to achieve objectives.

  • Navigates the diversity of views and styles in a way that enhances the effectiveness of the team as a whole in delivering on goals.

  • Maintains a strong focus on people development and engagement. Facilitates planning and execution of activities that delivers on staff development and enhances engagement.

  • Serves as a thought partner for vision and goal setting.

  • Keeps LT meetings on track with focused agendas and objectives.

  • Takes minutes and tracks deliverables.

  • Supports business planning, such as budget review, resource forecasting, and goals review.

  • Supports staff focused functional activities such as offsite planning and recognition events.

  • Challenges LT in a way that enhances team perspective and impact.

  • Anticipates needs of the LT, and prompts actions and conversations that enhances team success.

  • Balances needs of function and needs of overall organization.

  • Problem solves by leveraging understanding of business and functional relationships to activate the right people and solutions.

  • Spends time connecting individuals and teams within the function, across functions and across organizations.

  • Understands and advises on functional priorities within the context of enabling larger organizational success.

  • Advises on new approaches to address organizational needs and complex challenges within ECD and the broader organization.

The right candidate will possess the following qualifications:

  • Bachelors degree or equivalent combination of education and work experience.

  • Minimum 5 years of experience applying core business planning and project management skills in a relevant setting. Experience in pharma/biotech, particularly in clinical development, is highly preferred.

  • Experience in managing organizational cross-functional initiatives and/or business operations programs.

  • Strong business management skills to include strategic planning, business process management and improvement, project management, team facilitation and event planning.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including strong presentation skills. Ability to develop and execute on change management and communication strategies.

  • Adept at fostering positive, transparent and productive relationships.

  • Adapts quickly to rapidly changing business demands.

  • Takes initiative to solve a wide range of difficult problems in creative ways.

  • Proven ability to challenge current business standards and processes, with a track record of proposing effective solutions to problems.

  • Broad business knowledge.

  • Business or project management coursework or additional supportive training is desirable (e.g. PMP, Six Sigma, Lean, Design Thinking, Agile methodology, etc.).
