Position Summary

Position Purpose: As a senior member of the Global Communications team of ICANN org, this position will lead communications strategy and implementation of a range of ICANN initiatives. Includes supporting and promoting ICANN’s mission by increasing confidence in ICANN organization’s leadership (Executive team and Board of Directors), creating awareness and demonstrating ongoing commitments to transparency and accountability through communications strategies and execution.

Position Summary:Drive unified messaging and purposeful communications activities from the ICANN organization and Board in support of ICANN’s mission. Help drive ICANN’s external communications, including branding, messaging, advocacy and media relations. Lead a team of direct reports and provide coaching, performance evaluation and support.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Protect and enhance ICANN’s reputation through consistent, professional and strategic communications.
  • Draft and support CEO communications (speechwriting, briefings, bilateral meetings).
  • Support the development of the Board of Directors communications strategy and implementation, including content support for the Chairman of the Board in all ICANN events (speeches, blogs. correspondence, etc.).
  • Create, evaluate, implement and periodically revise messaging for specific ICANN teams (Policy, Legal, etc.).
  • Promote global participation in ICANN’s multistakeholder community, expanding awareness of ICANN, its work and its role in global Internet governance.
  • Support all stakeholder-facing deliverables from a design and content strategy viewpoint.

  • Interact regularly and coordinate with ICANN global leaders and communications leads on opportunities for thought leadership.
  • Hire, onboard, coach, train and manage performance reviews for assigned staff.
  • Interact and work with stakeholder groups as needed.
  • Ensure alignment in internal and external communications.

Required Education/Experience and Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs):

  • College degree in Journalism, business communications, or English degree required.
  • Candidates must have 12 years of relevant experience.
  • Effective communications: articulate, thorough and persuasive verbal abilities; clear writing skills, with exceptional creative and business writing/editing talent.
  • Proven ability to communicate complex concepts, policies and positions, both verbally and in writing, to internal and external audiences.
  • Fluent English required; at least one additional language at business competency level strongly preferred. Multicultural/multinational background preferred.
  • Ability to drive teams forward to reach challenging goals, with strong skills in developing and nurturing internal talent, promoting diversity and forging alliances.
  • Excellent organizational and management skills.
  • Proven experience solving complex issues in an ambiguous environment is essential for success in the role.
  • Crisis management experience a plus.
  • Ability to quickly learn the issues and cope with continuous change and pressure in a dynamic and fast-changing environment.
  • High degree of diplomacy, tact, discretion and commitment to integrity.
  • Demonstrated ability to multi-task, and to establish and follow through on priorities.
  • Highly collaborative approach, emphasizing integration across functions.
  • Proven ability to develop effective communication strategies and campaigns.
  • High level of personal accountability for the achievement of demanding objectives.
  • Capacity to learn, grow and stay focused.
  • Track record of contributing substantively in creative and brainstorming sessions.
  • Strong computer skills, emphasizing MS Office, required.
  • Ability to work with highly diverse workforce and international cultures required.
