Description:

BASIC FUNCTION: 
Under the direction of the cardiac cath lab manager, the Interventional Registered Cardiovascular Invasive Specialist’s primary responsibility is to assist the cardiologist with performing electrophysiology and cardiac catheterization procedures with all EP cases, temporary pacemaker insertions, permanent pacemaker and ICD insertions, PCI, stent placement, Rotoblator, CSI, IVUS, intra-aortic balloon insertions, Impella device and non-invasive procedures regularly performed in the cath lab environment using highly-complex equipment related to these procedures.  Assisting the cardiologist with monitoring and radiographic fluoroscopic procedures and troubleshooting equipment is a secondary assignment.  Staff will aid in technical assessments of image quality, which meet or exceed established standards.

NATURE AND SCOPE: 
This position will communicate with inter and intra-departmental staff, management, physicians, and patients.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES: 
Assists the cardiologist with a variety of general fluoroscopic, invasive and non- invasive procedures on adult patients.

Communicates relevant medical information to physicians and other staff through required documentation on specified medical record forms.

Selects automatic or manual exposure factors according to established standards, patient conditions and procedure information requirements.

Follows national and state radiation protection regulations for patients, self and staff.

Practices appropriate universal precaution techniques.

Responsible for the accuracy of all identification information or completed images prior to interpretation.

Enters data into computer systems as may be required for examinations, communications, orders, billing and statistical documentation.

Demonstrates a thorough knowledge of anatomy and physiology and uses this knowledge to enhance hemodynamic and angiographic techniques as observed by attending physician.

Recognizes potential emergency/life threatening situations and implements preventative measures as directed by the physician.

Demonstrates exceptional technical and manual dexterity during procedures while establishing priorities for each task to be performed under a physician’s direction.

Demonstrates ability to operate, problem-solve and improvise common and complex equipment malfunctions.

Demonstrates ability to learn and practice new techniques and equipment utilization by attending training sessions and familiarizing self with new procedure revisions as they occur.

Ability to perform all aspects of monitoring, recording, scrubbing, and recovery room responsibilities with exceptional level of professionalism and expertise.

Assists with development and implementation of departmental PI indicators and projects.

Promotes interdepartmental/client relationships with positive, interactive skills and maintains a professional, team-oriented working environment.

Assists with the training and development of all diagnostic trained RCIS personnel and helps to promote an atmosphere of learning and achievement.

Explaining testing procedures to patients to reduce anxiety and obtain cooperation.

Sets up non-invasive monitoring attachment – ECG (to include electrode placement); blood pressure cuff.

Adjusts equipment and controls according to physician’s orders or established protocol.

Wears protective equipment or supportive devices as appropriate for job.

Seeks appropriate employee health services (TB testing, immunizations, worker’s comp follow-up) with no prompting from manager.

Takes prompt action to avoid an accident when a work hazard exists (calls environmental services to bring wet floor signs, etc.).

Understands and has working knowledge of hospital fire safety procedures and knows how to respond appropriately.

Must be able to verbalize their responsibility in response to Code Adam (main building only).

Is able to locate a MSDS sheet for hazardous material found in department’s hazmat inventory.

Knows what to expect and what to do in the event of a utilities (telephone, electricity, plumbing, air conditioning, etc.) failure.

Understands and is able to discharge departmental and individual responsibilities in the event of a disaster (hurricane, fire, etc.).

Is familiar with contents of CCIRH “Safety Information Badge.”

Understands and performs their role in regard to security of patients, visitors, personnel and property.

Able to work in a fast-paced environment.

Communicates clearly with staff and patients.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: 
High School Diploma or equivalent is required.

Graduate of AMA or AOA approved programs of radiology or cardiovascular technology.

Current license in an allied health specialty, such as RN, RT(R) with CV, RCES or RCIS.

Current BLS and ACLS Certification from American Heart Association or American Red Cross.
