How will you make an impact?
Our multi-disciplinary team based in Austin, Texas, is looking for a key team member in the development of analytical instrumentation and software for life sciences, forensics, toxicology, and environmental analyses. As a part of the Applied Analytical Technology team at Thermo Fisher Scientific, your work will have real-world impact.

A Software Engineer is needed to lead design, development, and integration of instrument control software for our gas chromatography and mass spectrometry product portfolio. The successful candidate will be an experienced and motivated professional with a focus on the future. As a development lead, this position will require the ability to work independently, prioritize goals, oversee multiple code bases, and follow through on tasks to completion. This position reports directly to the Manager of Software Engineering.

What will you do?

  • Work with a multi-disciplinary team of engineers and scientists to design innovative analytical instruments which are used in forensics, toxicology, environmental analyses, and life sciences
  • Define system requirements based on market needs, evaluate development efforts, and perform design work as needed.
  • Develop instrument control software for mass spectrometers, autosamplers, gas chromatographs, and other scientific instruments.
  • Provide leadership in new product development and introduction (NPDI) projects
  • Assist in coordinating and conducting unit testing, design patterns, code reviews, and software verification to ensure the quality of developed software
  • Maintain detailed documentation and commentary on all work for software support and the preservation of the company’s intellectual property.
  • Troubleshoot and improve existing instrument control software
  • Communicate regularly with other stakeholders in the R&D team and other functional areas throughout Thermo Fisher.
  • Keep abreast of all developments: internal, technical, competitive, legal compliance and market related, in order to ensure that the company is pursuing the software technologies required to be competitive.
  • Other duties as assigned

How will you get here?

  • Bachelor’s degree in a computer science or related discipline is required.
  • The successful candidate should possess 8+ years of applicable experience, or an advanced degree with 6+ years of applicable experience.
  • Significant practical experience developing for Microsoft .NET using C#
  • Significant practical experience with SQL and XML
  • Demonstrated mastery of design and tools required in the role and associated industry standards and best practices.

  • Knowledge and experience working with scientific instruments
  • Chromatography and/or Mass Spectrometry experience
