Amazon Technical Academy (ATA) is an end-to-end learning and placement program designed to transition those without a software engineering background into technical roles within the company. As a Software Development Engineer on our Instructional Engineering team, you will have the unique opportunity to divide your time between software development, curriculum development and technical instruction as you help create the next generation of diverse technical talent for Amazon. As an engineer, you will function as a technical subject matter expert, owning system architecture and design and work within the team to deliver innovative solutions for the program. As an instructor, you will work directly with adult learners teaching them software development fundamentals in a classroom setting, guiding them through hands on projects, and preparing them in all ways for a successful career in software engineering. You will be responsible for continually improving our custom, Amazon-specific technical curriculum. You will also be responsible for driving student success and support efforts by identifying trends in performance, implementing development and intervention strategies when necessary, and holding office hours.

A successful candidate will possess an entrepreneurial mindset, including a high tolerance for ambiguity, a penchant for experimentation, and a bias toward action. They will continuously evaluate ongoing assumptions about what€™s most important for learners. This is a chance to play a significant role in the training and development of Amazon€™s technical talent.

· Work directly with students as they master the curriculum and learn how to be a Software Development Engineer.
· Iterate on our end-to-end learning pathway including the sequencing, scope and cadence of curriculum.
· Monitor student success, evaluate performance and provide meaningful feedback.
· Support students success by identifying trends in performance, implementing development and intervention strategies when necessary, and holding office hours to provide 1:1 support.
· Continuously evaluate curriculum (readings, projects, quizzes and tests) and drive improvements to ensure quality, business impact, and scalability.
· Facilitate a dynamic and collaborative classroom community.
· Co-own the technical architecture and design for Amazon Technical Academy software and services.


· Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related field.
· 5+ years of relevant software development and design experience.
· Experience developing and conducting technical training.
· Excellent communication skills, including superior skill in explaining technical topics to novices and collaborating with subject matter experts and managers.
· You enjoy and have demonstrated success developing junior software engineers.
· Computer Science fundamentals in object-oriented design, data structures, algorithms and problem solving.
· Proficiency with Java or an equivalent OO language.
· Thorough understanding of service oriented architecture, distributed systems, workflow management.
· Deep familiarity with Amazon's SDE hiring and performance bars.
· A track record of Delivering Results as an SDE.
· Thrive in a startup environment.
· Passion for diversity and technical education.


· Experience teaching adults.
· M.A in Learning, Design and Technology, Education or related discipline or equivalent practical experience.
· Working knowledge of LMS capabilities or online course development tool (i.e. Canvas, Captivate, Articulate).
