The Principal DBA works without appreciable supervision as a part of the Product Technology team. Oversees, operates and coordinates large multi-tier virtual environment, typically operational 24x7 basis with global users, and typically comprised of multiple technologies. Executes activities relating to the operation and maintenance of databases including monitoring, backups, installation, configuration and operation of new and patching of existing databases. Work requires the application of technical as well as business principles and creative/analytical techniques typically acquired in a recognized four-year or more academic course of study. Implements Abbott specific policies, standards and procedures to accomplish assignments and resolves a broad range of issues and problems. Evaluates existing database architecture and proposes changes for optimal performance and continually keeps customers apprised of application gains that can be achieved with SQL tuning/enhancements. Performs special assignments and projects as directed. Identifies and routinely uses the most effective, cost efficient and best business practices to execute processes; continually evaluates their effectiveness and appropriateness. Exercises independent judgment in planning, organizing and performing work; monitors performance and reports status to manager. Assures that quality of services meets requirements. Publishes weekly/ monthly reports to management and customers as needed. Remains current on developments in field(s) of expertise.

Job Duties:

  • Host meetings with customers / DBA team when operational issues arise and be the point person for communicating issue status and resolution time. Identify root cause and avoid recurrence. Must effectively interact with database vendor support to expeditiously address operational issues that crop up
  • Conduct technical reviews with other DBA’s in the team, identify any risks  and summarize proposals with management
  • Evaluate new technology from time to time to benefit the applications or administration of databases
  • Meet audit and compliance processes and assist in collecting audit evidence as required.
  • Leads architecture, design and implementation activities related to databases and aligns this application architecture and/or work closely with Product Technology Architect to review the database design
  • Sets up/participates in customer walkthroughs and plans; design and technical workshops; and problem resolution and decision making
  • Collaborates with Applications Development and System Administration to ensure overlapping responsibilities are addressed and that there are no responsibility gaps
  • Prepares presentations on complex issues in the area of expertise and create appropriate operational guides or check lists
  • Modifies, maintains, and updates complex system architecture diagrams
  • May manage projects with large budgets or of extended duration.
  • May be responsible for multi-year planning to determine broad direction, prioritize projects and evaluate ROI within a functional sub-area.
  • Installs, configures and patches (quarterly) database software on various platforms.
  • Responsible for providing and ensuring data availability, data integrity, and data security.
  • Performs routine database administration functions including database capacity planning, pro-active performance monitoring and tuning, executing security procedures and backup and recovery processes.
  • Ensures Golden gate replication streams and Data Guard log shipping is occurring and proactive monitoring is implemented
  • Performs operations to ensure Disaster Recovery site is updated and ready to GO LIVE when needed.
  • Supports activities such as gathering requirements from internal clients and acts as a member of and resource to various application development and application operation teams in the development, QA (Quality Assurance), and test/production environments.
  • Contributes to development of new concepts and designs in collaboration with business users, other IT service delivery teams to implement new services, or resolve the most complex issues/changes to existing services.
  • Develops, communicates and trains others on enterprise policies, standards and procedures.
  • Contribute to complex and innovative business solutions to achieve strategic objectives and makes specific recommendations for solutions that meet business objectives.
  • Provides recommendations for the implementation of highly available, tightly integrated, secure, flexible, and fault-tolerant systems.
  • Works with key stakeholders to establish a vision and database architecture for the future, and establish a prioritized list of projects.
  • Collaboratively works with the development team to ensure applications meet operational requirements and meet SLA goals.
  • Works with considerable latitude in determining operational objectives, reports on status of reaching those objectives.
  • Be able to mentor junior members in the team
  • Works with management to ensure that all appropriate budget and cost containment policies are adhered to.
  • Establishes trust and credibility at all levels of the organization
  • Researches and forecasts new technology capabilities and their applicability within the greater organization.
  • Complies with U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulations, other regulatory requirements, Company policies, operating procedures, processes, and task assignments.
  • Maintains positive and cooperative communications and collaboration with all levels of employees, customers, contractors, and vendors.
  • Performs other related duties and responsibilities, on occasion, as assigned.

    Minimum Requirements:

    • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, a related field, or equivalent
    • 5+ years of technical experience in database administration including direct experience in a medium to large sized environment
    • In-depth knowledge and hands-on experience with: installation and maintenance of current or/and latest versions of relevant Oracle and /MSSQL/MySQL database software; experience supporting large-scale database

      Preferred Requirements:

      • Strong technical familiarity with Oracle RAC, Grid/ASM, RDBMS, OEM, and Golden gate required.
      • A relevant advanced degree and/or appropriate professional certification, i.e., Oracle certifications, MSSQL/MYSQL certifications. Ability to administer postgres DB, golden gate & TDE features, and have ability to program in an administrative language (e.g., Perl, shell scripting).
      • Experienced in implementing and managing Golden Gate technology streams, Data guard log shipping and maintenance of Disaster Recovery sites and its backups.
      • Periodic patching of systems, automation of routine activities and continuous improvement in monitoring is a must.
      • Expert knowledge and comprehensive application of advanced Structured Query Language (SQL) concepts including PL-SQL, database backup, and restoration methods/techniques; expertise in database modeling (logical/physical) and design; advanced knowledge of database administration and monitoring tools.
      • Strong (OS) Operating System experience in both Linux and Windows and how they interact with the supporting DB for both tuning and support.
      • Demonstrated understanding of High Data Availability concepts and methods, specifically Oracle RAC, Oracle Replication and DR methodologies.
      • Demonstrated ability to understand and comply with all applicable regulatory and company operating procedures, processes, policies, and tasks.
      • Experience in designing Oracle, MySQL/MSSQL database platforms.
      • Strong process and procedure ownership experience for system audits.
      • Highly organized, capable of multi-tasking and capable of coordinating/aligning resources under an integrated project plan.
      • Strong problem solving skills.
      • Must be able to respond quickly and debug Incidents and develop strategies to prevent them from reoccurring, monitoring improvements.
      • Learn operational procedures and must be ready to respond to Disaster Recovery situations for the supported applications. 
      • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to influence within and across organizations, functions and business areas.
      • Excellent analytical, presentation, and organizational skills and the ability to meet multiple deadlines and work independently.
      • Must be able to manage an assignment from start to completion; must be adept at handling multiple assignments in a timely manner and meeting assigned deadlines. Able to leverage and/or engage others to accomplish projects.
      • Ability to use discretion and handle sensitive/confidential information. Demonstrated ability to understand and comply with applicable regulations and Company operating procedures, processes, policies, and tasks.
      • Ability to work in a highly matrixed and geographically diverse business environment.
