The Applied Physics Laboratory at the University of Washington (APL-UW) is a national center for advanced science and engineering research and development and education.  APL-UW was formed in 1943 for the U.S.  Navy to bring university research resources to bear on urgent WWII defense problems. APL-UW has developed an international reputation for its broad based programs in science, engineering and for designing, building, and deploying the advanced technology required to meet the research needs of numerous government and commercial sponsors. With modern facilities, equipment and over 350 talented researchers and staff, APL-UW provides a unique, dynamic work environment with many opportunities.

The Applied Physics Laboratory at the University of Washington seeks applicants for a Senior Mechanical Engineer in the research areas of oceanography; ocean engineering; marine renewable energy; marine robotics; and, autonomous vehicles. The purpose of the research projects that the Mechanical Engineer Senior supports varies from understanding oceanographic and ocean acoustics phenomena; solving complex applied ocean engineering and marine robotics dilemmas; transitioning technology to the US Navy; to optimizing marine renewable energy technologies. Research sponsors include National Science Foundation (NSF), Department of Defense (DoD), US Navy, National Aeronautic and Space Administration (NASA), National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), Defense Applied Research Projects Agency (DARPA), and other research universities.


Strategic Planning, Funding and Project Management
-Make significant contributions to Ocean Engineering department (OED) strategy by actively participating in OED leadership meetings and retreats; delivering sponsor visit presentations and tours; attending proposer day funding events; recruiting, hiring and mentoring OED staff.  
-Identify funding opportunities and plan and lead responses (e.g., author or contribute to proposals for independent or collaborative work; serves as Principal Investigator or as a member of other PIs projects)
-Plan, lead, and manage APL sponsored research activities (e.g., for own proposals, develop then implement research plan and budget; for work on other PIs projects, develop then implement plan for engineering-related work)
-Provide direction to researchers in the execution of sponsored research activities (e.g., feasibility of design, engineering, or fabrication concepts; use of alternative engineering approaches; recommendations for future design improvements)

Ocean Engineering Design & Analysis
-Work with researchers to conceptualize and design systems, assemblies and parts to solve oceanographic, acoustic, marine renewable energy, US Naval and marine robotics problems and dilemmas
-Perform stress analysis using both analysis software (ANSYS Finite Element Analysis) and empirical equations

Build, Deploy and Maintain
-Direct the APL Machine Shop and technicians in the fabrication, assembly, integration and testing of systems and parts
-Specify and procure commercial off-the-shelf mechanical materials, parts and assemblies
-Plan and manage the at-sea installation and recovery of systems


Doctoral degree in Mechanical or Ocean Engineering, or closely related discipline. Equivalent experience can substitute for degree requirement.

At least (8) eight years of experience, including:

-Identifying and leading or contributing to funding opportunities.

-Mechanical or ocean engineering design and analysis.

-Computer Aided Design (preferably using SolidWorks).

-Developing, from scratch, novel mechanical solutions to unique engineering problems.

-Managing multiple projects and workload to meet hard deadlines and deliverables.

-Basic machining and fabrication/assembly skills.

-Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.

- Ability to meet the physical requirements necessary to work at sea in small to large vessels for extended periods and willing to perform the required duties aboard ships.

- Ability to work independently, and as part of a research team, interacting cooperatively with people from diverse backgrounds, academic levels, and nationalities.

- Ability to acquire and maintain a Department of Defense (DoD) security clearance.

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.


Experience with:

- Marine robotics, UUVs, AUVs, ocean gliders, marine renewable energy design

- Systems for US Naval applications

- Heat transfer analysis

- Fluid mechanics

- Corrosion control

- Hydraulic system

- Research diving
