Abbott Point of Care is an industry leader for bedside diagnostic devices that provide fast and accurate results to healthcare professionals in order to accelerate clinical decision-making.  The New Product Introduction (NPI) team is responsible for bringing newly designed instrument concepts from R&D prototyping into full scale production.  This includes system level development and validation & verification of custom equipment, software, and processes

As an NPI Engineer, you will be challenged to create reliable and consistent processes for next generation designs.  You will be required to be a self-motivated attacker of engineering, process, and material problems alike.  You will be responsible for helping move instrument development projects across the finish line to full production, final transfer, and ultimately product launch into hospitals as well as early product life support. We are seeking bright engineers and top performers that can make big contributions to our team. 

Main Purpose of Role:

Apply skills and knowledge in science, engineering, mathematics and/or project management to complete moderately complex assignments with little to no supervision. 

Main Responsibilities:

  • Support new product and on-market process improvement, cost improvement, product improvement (ex. reliability etc.), supply continuity, and CAPA projects as well as on-going engineering support needs (ex. troubleshooting, production needs etc.).
  • Independently, or lead a project team to, identify, plan, communicate, and implement medium-size assigned projects requiring a combination of conventional and custom risk-managed execution plans, investigations and/or equipment; manage multiple often concurrent projects;
  • Lead technical projects with multiple inter-coordinating elements where problem resolution may involve the application of new methods and/or approaches and may require consideration of impact with other system components and/or users; This may include preparing designs and work specifications, developing project schedules, and selecting materials, equipment, project staff, and external contractors.
  • Liaise with other operational areas in the organization (e.g., engineering, drafting, technical, quality, R&D, technical support) to secure required resources/information/contributions to complete assigned tasks.
  • Utilize analytical skills and critical thinking to perform in-depth system investigations and problem solving
  • Use advanced data analysis tools techniques compile and evaluate design and test data, prepare technical specifications, and determine appropriate limits and variables for product, process, or materials specifications.
  • Set project priorities, allocate tasks, and coordinate project resources to meet project targets and milestones.
  • Lead and/or participate on cross-functional teams to support organizational goals;
  • Serve as a subject matter expert (SME) or independent technical expert (ITE) on a subset or select subsets of a project's technical matters; may interface with external firms or agencies;
  • Responsible for completing documentation in a timely manner and in accordance with business standards;
  • Understand and comply with applicable EHS policies, procedures, rules and regulations;
  • Responsible for implementing and maintaining the effectiveness of the Quality System.
  • Achieve best practices that meet medical device industry standard, including design control and documentation

    Preferred Candidate will have:

    • Data analysis
    • Highly self-motivated, creative and adaptable in developing expertise in multiple fields of discipline and performing various and varying roles in the organization
    • Proficiency in technical documentation and oral and written communication skills
    • Capable of effectively interfacing with cross-functional team members in achieving common goals

      Plus if you have:

      Familiar with regulatory requirements for the medical device industry, particularly the working experience in design control

      Experience in software, electrical, mechanical and/or materials engineering or science applications


      Bachelor's degree (preferably in Engineering, science or a closely related discipline is desired) or equivalent technical
      experience and demonstrated competence rqeuired; additional post-graduate education may contribute toward the desired
      years of experience; Typically requires 5+ years of significant engineering and / or operational experience to develop the
      competence to meet the skills and responsibilities of the position; Candidates / incumbents should possess the following: -
      strong technical knowledge and application of concepts, practices and procedures; - ability or aptitude to work on problems
      that are complex in scope where analysis of situations or data involves multiple competing factors; - ability to form and
      develop interpersonal, professional relationships; display socially and professionally appropriate behavior; - ability to work
      independently and in groups; ability to work cross-functionally; - demonstrated initiative and problem-solving skills; criticalthinking
      skills; - ability and aptitude to use various types of databases and other computer software; - ability to prioritize; -
      strong organizational and project management skills; - demonstrated competency with financial systems and in fiscal controls;
      - ability to quickly gain knowledge, understanding or skills and is willing to learn; Engineers trained in one branch of the
      Engineering field may work in related branches of engineering provided demonstrated transferable skills.
