Our educational and training programs include the Pathology Residency Training Program, the Ph.D. Program in the Molecular Basis of Disease, and the teaching of medical students, postdoctoral research fellows and clinical fellows.

The Center for Precision Diagnostics in the Laboratory Medicine has an outstanding opportunity for a permanent full-time Senior Computer Specialist to support the analysis of clinical exome and genome sequencing assays.  The selected candidate will work under the general direction of the PI and more senior level personnel to provide analytical and development support for all phases of sequence data analysis within a cutting-edge clinical laboratory. This is an excellent opportunity to work in a challenging and rewarding environment that includes the development of bioinformatics tools to facilitate the implementation of genomic medicine.

Critical to the establishment and development of a new UW initiative focused on Precision Diagnostics. This position will specifically develop web-based tools to interrogate large genomic datasets to enable clinicians to diagnose/treat patients with a wide array of genetic disorders and cancers.  Support of the laboratory to produce high quality DNA sequence data, in a rapid fashion, will also be a major focus of this work.

Duties and responsibilities include:
  • Chief web tool developer for the interpretation and dissemination of clinical data to healthcare professionals.
  • Be point of contact for UW-IT department for server/cloud maintenance issues.
  • Generation of tools meant to convey pre-generated performance metrics of genomic sequencing runs to scientists within the laboratory.
  • Generation of simple tools summarizing descriptive information, drawn from public databases, about genetic variants of interest discovered in clinical genomic assays. These tools will be used by members of the lab as well as parties external to the lab.
  • Design and manage a database for the storage of sequence variant and interpretative data.
  • Develop databases for the storage and aggregation of genetic variant information from individual patients.
  • Manage release of variant data to public data databases (Clinvar, etc.).
  • Develop solutions to the long-term storage of sequencing data.
  • Provide technical support for the laboratory directors, scientists and investigators.
  • Attend meetings as required.
  • Other duties as assigned. 

    Minimum Requirements:
  • Bachelors Degree in computer science, engineering, or a related field.
  • Minimum 5 years experience working in diverse computing environments to include: LINUX, UNIX, Windows, significant experience implementing software testing methodologies and experience launching analytical pipelines in the cloud.
  • Must possess full stack web development skills.
  • Must be skilled in designing, developing and maintaining databases (relational and NoSQL).
  • Must have demonstrated experience in the life-cycle of software development from requirements gathering through production and release.
  • Must be proficient with a variety of tools:  Python, JavaScript, HTML5, Linux, Windows, C++, Perl.
