Position Summary:

We are searching for a Scientist I, Analytical Chemistry, who will focus on analytical chemistry to perform raw material analysis for trace elements by ICP-MS as well as contribute to the development of new analytical assays designed to address issues in cell culture media development and production. The Scientist I will collect and prepare samples, execute ICP-MS experiments, analyze data, generate spread sheets or laboratory reports, and perform data trending summaries under the supervision of an R&D manager or senior scientist. In addition to performing ICP-MS experiments, the Scientist I will have the opportunity to learn other analytical technologies as related to raw material characterization.

What will you do?


  • Works under general supervision of an R&D manager and with other R&D scientists to prepare samples for trace element analysis via ICP-MS.
  • Performs routine calibration and maintenance of ICP-MS equipment.
  • Performs standard ICP-MS sample acquisition, data analysis, and results export.
  • Communicates with other R&D scientists on instrument operation and trouble shooting.
  • Maintains an ICP-MS database and manages raw materials inventory, including monitoring, requesting, and shipping of raw materials from different Thermo Fisher sites.
  • Complies with all company safety, training, and quality regulations and procedures.
  • Maintains accurate lab notebooks and complies with Good Laboratory Practices.
  • May be required to perform other related duties as required and/or assigned.

How will you get here?

Education (Minimum Qualifications, must have):

  • BachelorĂ¢€™s degree in Chemistry, Biology, Bioengineering, Biochemistry or other related discipline.
  • Familiar with analytical chemistry methods and techniques.
  • Demonstrated competence in data analysis.


  • Good experience in sample weighing and sample dissolution into appropriate solvents is required.
  • Previous experience in database management, such as Excel, is required.
  • Good understanding and working knowledge of chemistry principles, such as acid/base chemistry, sample solubility, and precipitation, as it relates to the sample preparation is expected.
  • Knowledge of aqueous chemistry of inorganic and organic compounds used in cell culture media is desired.
  • Previous hands-on experience in using Thermo Fisher Scientific, Waters, and Agilent analytical instruments, such as ICP, HPLC, and GC, is a differentiator.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to communicate scientific results in a clear, concise and accurate manner.
  • Excellent computer skills with programs such as Microsoft Word, Excel, and Powerpoint.
  • Excellent organizational skills, including the ability to efficiently evaluate and manage multiple project tasks.
