      General Job / Performance Information
      Education and Experience
  • Graduate from a Respiratory Therapy program accredited by CoARC. 
  • Minimum 2 years of respiratory care clinical experience working in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and 1 year of experience as a NICU/PICU Flight therapist.
  • Must be a Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) and have obtained Neonatal Pediatric Specialty (NPS) certification.
  • Must be current in BLS, NRP, PALS and STABLE.
  • Exceptions will be based on the discretion of the Pedi/Neo Educator and Director of Respiratory Care.

Environmental / Working Conditions

  • The Transport Therapist will work an 84 hour/per pay period schedule.  Hours of duty and work requirements may be irregular to accommodate departmental & patient requirements.
  • In addition, the Transport Therapist will be required to rotate call coverage beyond normal business hours.
  • Occupational exposure of extreme heat and cold.

Interaction with Other Departments and Other Relationships

  • Candidate must possess strong service orientation and the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with peers, transfer center, comp center and outside referral center.

Job Description

  • Under the supervision of the Neo/Pedi Educator, the Transport Therapist will perform multiple tasks such as, intubations, HFJV, conventional ventilation, NIV, assisting nurses with duties, ABGs, CBGs, educate and precept new therapists joining the Respiratory Team.
  • In addition, the Transport Therapists will respond to request of physicians, sets up and operates various types of respiratory care equipment and performs procedures to be utilized in routine and complex treatment of respiratory diseases in compliance with policy and procedure. The Transport Therapist will maintain proficiency in all general activities and patient populations.  Performs other duties outside of the assigned core group.

Required Licensures / Certifications / Registrations

  • Licensed by Texas Medical Board in Respiratory Care.
  • Registered Respiratory Therapist, (RRT) Credentials with the National Board of Respiratory Care.
  • Neonatal/Pediatric Specialist, (NPS) Credentials with the National Board of Respiratory Care.
  • Certification in Neonatal Pediatric Transport (C-NPT) preferred, however, it is required within first year of employment.

Physical Capabilities

  • Must be emotionally and physically fit.
  • Work requires walking and standing a great deal of the time.
  • Frequent bending over a patient in bed for several minutes at a time.
  • Frequent lifting of patients and heavy equipment is required.  Must be able to assist moving objects weighing over 100 pounds.
  • Adequate hand/eye coordination and fine motor skills are required.

Skills and Abilities

  • All Respiratory Therapists are expected to display an acceptable level of technical competence in carrying out their assigned duties while exhibiting strong organizational and critical thinking skills.
  • Represents UMC Flight Team in public relations and safety in-services to improve awareness and safety.  Other duties and responsibilities may be added, deleted, or changed at any time at the discretion of management, either orally or in writing.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively verbally & in written form, able to work independently, express independent judgment and tolerate high stress levels while maintaining a good rapport with co-workers.
  • Must be willing to commit to a minimum of 10 call shifts per month in order to maintain your transport team eligibility.
