The Division of Medical Oncology in the Department of Medicine has an outstanding opportunity for a full-time Research Scientist/Engineer 1.

This position is engaged in cancer research, translational medicine, and immunology. Specific cancers that are researched include lung, breast, colon, bladder, prostate, and ovarian.

The Cancer Vaccine Institute (CVI) includes multiple researchers that develop novel, immune based therapies for treatment, prevention and diagnoses of cancer. This position provides support for basic research and pre-clinical trials in mice that will potentially be developed into new human clinical trials. It supports the progression of an experiment from initial tests, progressing through the research toward the final pre-clinical project. These pre-clinical trials often result in additional funding for new clinical trials, supporting the development of translational research. 

  • Perform tissue cell culture and cryopreservation using sterile techniques.
  • Process animal tissue, including splenocyte preparation and preliminary tissue fixation.
  • Basic microbiologic techniques, such as inoculate agar plates and growth media with bacteria.
  • Independently perform giga-preps for DNA vaccines; coordinate with the schedule of animal vaccinations and independently maintain the stock of vaccine at levels adequate for experiment.
  • Keep accurate records and documentation of experimental results and assist with database data entry as needed.
  • Works under limited supervision, demonstrating the ability to work independently. Regularly report experimental results to the manager. Support multiple PI's projects.
  • Perform general lab upkeep duties, including preparation of solutions for experiments, ordering and maintaining laboratory supplies, general laboratory maintenance, assure lab compliance with EH&S regulations and guidelines

  • Bachelor's degree in Biology or related field, and one or more years of relevant laboratory research experience

    Additional Requirements:
  • Experience with biochemical and microbiological techniques (DNA amplification and purification, bacteria culture).
  • Experience with cell culture and tissue processing (splenocyte preparation or tissue fixation) working in a sterile BSL2 environment
  • Must be exceptionally organized with attention to detail and superb time management
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and the ability to work within a team-oriented environment
  • Self-motivated individual with an interest in translational research

    Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.


  • Experience with MS Excel
