The UW Department of Immunology has an excellent opportunity for a part-time Research Scientist Assistant (20 hours/week).

The Research Scientist Assistant is a training level of professional work, requiring a bachelor's degree in an engineering or scientific discipline and little or no experience, or the equivalent of a degree achieved through a combination of applicable education and experience. Under immediate supervision, the Research Scientist Assistant performs assigned tasks requiring the application of standard procedures and techniques; relies on instructions and pre-established guidelines to perform the functions of the job. Position is usually limited in its application of functional area theory and principles to develop solutions to problems of limited scope. May also receive formal classroom or seminar-type training.

The Research Scientist Assistant performs assignments to develop professional work knowledge and ability and will be expected to know fundamental concepts, practices and procedures of particular field of specialization. This individual works under immediate supervision to complete assigned tasks/projects; receives specific and detailed instructions regarding required tasks and results expected; relies on pre-established guidelines to perform the functions of the job. Work is checked during progress and is reviewed for accuracy upon completion.

RESPONSIBILITIES
Performs a variety of routine tasks that are planned to provide experience and familiarization with the technical professional staff, methods, practices, and programs of the unit/laboratory/department.
Solves well-defined problems using accepted methods and techniques.
Conducts experiments or tests in the laboratory/field that include making measurements and recording data.
Contributes data for use in reports and publications.
Networks primarily limited to own technical peer group; establishes productive relationships with co-workers, customers/grant sponsors, and others to accomplish team objectives.
No defined role in identifying/securing research funding.
Performs a variety of administrative and operational tasks, including but not limited to supply ordering; tracking grant spending; working with the administrative team on budgeting and logistics related to ordering, receipt, and storage of critical research supplies.
Manages biosafety protocols, escalating potential problems as needed and assisting in preparation for lab inspections performed by UW Environmental Health & Safety; organizing equipment repair and maintenance; and general lab support.
Helps with miscellaneous wet lab work as needed.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
May supervise lab volunteers and guide the work of peers, technicians or other support staff as necessary to complete specific assignments.


MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Bachelor's degree in biological sciences or related field. Up to three months of relevant work experience.

Ability to multitask successfully.
Ability to be self-sufficient and solve problems independently when possible.
Strong organizational skills.
Experience/familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite.
Ability to work in a team environment.
Strong attention to procedural detail and record-keeping.

Equivalent education and/or experience may substitute for minimum requirements.
