Public Works Engineering Intern

The City of Dana Point is looking for a Public Works/Engineering Intern. This is an excellent opportunity to gain hands-on work experience working for the public agency and to jump start your resume. The Public Works Intern will perform a variety of tasks in support of the City’s Department of Public Works and Engineering Services. The intern will conduct research, compile and analyze data, and perform administrative and technical support tasks. This position requires working knowledge of AutoCAD Civil 3D. As such, an AutoCAD Civil 3D test will be administered prior to placement

This is an hourly, part-time position, working approximately 20 hours per week and with minimum of a six-month commitment. Candidates must have a work permit and be able to legally work in the United States.

The ideal candidate will possess the following knowledge & abilities:


Basic office procedures and customer service skills.

Basic research methods and techniques.

Understand and follow oral and written instructions and sketches.

Modern office methods, practices and procedures.

Computer software programs including AutoCAD Civil 3D, ArcGIS, Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point and Outlook. 

Safe work practices and procedures.


Understand and follow oral and written instructions.

Communicate clearly, both orally and in writing for differing audiences.

Use AutoCAD Civil 3D.

Independently prepare correspondence and memoranda.

Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Operate a motor vehicle safely.


Additional Salary Information: SICK LEAVE - The Healthy Families Healthy Workplace Act provides part-time employees with up to 24 hours of paid sick leave per year that may be used beginning on the employee’s 90th day of employment, provided the employee has worked 30 calendar days in the calendar year. RETIREMENT - The City does not participate in social security. In lieu of social security, the City will contribute an additional 7.5% of the employee’s earnings to a 457 deferred compensation account on the employee’s behalf.
