Abbott Ireland Nutrition Division – Cootehill

Abbott Nutrition in Cootehill manufactures infant nutritional products for the export markets.  The facility is dedicated to providing products of the highest quality standard to its customers.

Abbott Nutrition produces a range of infant formulae in all pack sizes under the brand name “Similac”. To complement the range of “Similac” infant formulae, the facility also manufactures a range of follow on formulae under the brand name of “Gain”. The essential ingredient is liquid skim milk and this is combined with carbohydrate, vegetable oils, vitamins and minerals. The product is blended, pasteurized, dried and packaged at the site and once packaged, is distributed to Europe, South East Asia, the Middle East, Latin America and Canada.

Established in 1975, Abbott Nutrition in Ireland is the largest powder manufacturing facility for the production of infant formulae within the Abbott Corporation worldwide.

Approximately 1,000 dairy farms in Ireland and Northern Ireland supply quality milk to the Cootehill facility which processes 500,000 litres per day. This secure supply together with Ireland’s reputation as a green, clean environment is of significant strategic importance to Abbott Nutrition

Primary Function

  • This position has responsibility for managing the sites capital portfolio using a systematic process to scope, plan, execute and monitor the multiple capital projects across the manufacturing site
  • Develop and manage program governance and communication with stakeholders and project teams for the capital portfolio
  • Comply with division and corporate policy and procedures on writing, routing, and managing projects and budgets
  • Contributes to the development and monitoring of area budget through regular analysis of capital and expense financial plans and spending.
  • Interface with division capital business office, the financial center, and site stakeholders on achieving financial targets and justifying capital improvements
  • Create and monitor capital project KPI’s
  • Monitor project progress on a systematic basis and identify delays and obstacles. Communicate with internal and external team, ensuring clear direction is given, with explanation where required.
  • Continuous develop Capital Management Office, including but not limited to training, tools and processes. Stay current with latest developments in project management field

    Major Responsibilities

    • Prepare and report monthly capital project financials and portfolio dashboard
    • Performance analysis on financial results and identify trends and highlight issues by liaising with project engineers and stakeholders
    • Lead capital project management processes to drive good work prioritisation and resource allocation decisions.
    • Acts as a coach to ensure project deliverables are identified and monitored during the lifecycle of a project which ensures high quality and sustainable solutions
    • Document and track activities, scope changes and lessons learned across capital portfolio
    • Identify cross-functional needs from the manufacturing site and align with division capital business office and division engineer to plan, prioritize and implementation of initiatives. Responsible for developing and maintaining 5 year capital plan.
    • May be asked to projects depending on project scope, project portfolio and business needs.

      Supervisory/Management Responsibilities

      This position will assume responsibility for the successful management of the site capital portfolio at the Abbott Nutrition Cootehill site and will be required to be:

      • Responsible to create project justification with input from stakeholders and complete request for capital authorization
      • High attention to detail to ensure financial accuracy on a monthly basis across project portfolio
      • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are a vital part of this role

        • Create, track and maintain financial reports and work closely with financial and accounting teams onsite and remote
        • Track and maintain accurate project files from project scope through commercialization and lessons learned   
        • Track project lifecylce across capital portfolio and create reporting templates to communicate status against plans and KPI’s
        • Must demonstrate an appropriate sense of urgency and prioritise independently.
        • Have ability to provide clear direction and define priorities.
        • Review the quality of the work completed with the project team on a regular basis to ensure that it meets the project standards

           Education Required
          • Bachelor’s Degree (preferably in Engineering, Finance or Business) is required or 6+ years of manufacturing, financial or quality operations experience. 

            Knowledge

            • Proven project financial tracking and planning experience
            • Demonstrated understanding of PMBOK principles
            • Demonstrate end to end project management experience of a diverse array of projects.
            • Desired candidate should have 6+ years of experience across the areas of financial analysis, program management, manufacturing operations, manufacturing support systems, quality operations, project management, or continuous improvement functions. 
            • Should have knowledge of other functions that provide inputs regularly, i.e., quality, safety, planning, finance, purchasing, manufacturing, engineering, and operations. 
            • Preferred candidate to demonstrate proficiency in lean manufacturing principles
            • Possess strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills
            • Computer skills, with high proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Microsoft Outlook. SAP a plus
            • Must be open-minded and adaptive to change, promote the collective interests of the team more than self-interest, able to resolve problems in a respectful manner
