Private Engineering Services Intern (Summer 2018)

The engineering intern assists the staff of the Private Engineering Services Division in the Department of Community Development. The intern is responsible primarily for site inspections and documenting observations but also assists in drafting, surveying, reviewing/marking plans, maintaining files and handling other projects as assigned.

 EXAMPLES OF RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

 Inspect sites during the course of construction, alteration, and repair for quality of materials, installation and construction technique. Ensure that improvements conform to approved plans, codes, ordinances and standard procedures.

Prepare daily inspection reports detailing conditions found, actions taken, and recommendations for further action. Prepare lists of deficiencies for project closeout and review letters to developers and contractors.

 Conduct field surveys, and research existing records to determine topographical information and location of utility lines. Maintain project records.

 Describe difficult or unusual problems on construction sites to the Development Services Inspector for resolution.

 Address concerns and handles confrontational situations with residents and contractors in the field. Make investigations of complaints or requests, document findings, and assure compliance from contractors, government agencies, etc.

Comply with all personal safety rules and regulations, both written and verbal as instructed by the supervisor.

 Handle special projects as assigned.

 

Knowledge of operating procedures concerning equipment, instruments, material and techniques used in surveying, drafting and construction site inspection.

 Knowledge of applicable municipal codes, federal and state requirements, as well as standard construction practices.

 Ability to use personal computers and associated applications including spreadsheets, word processing, AutoCAD and databases.

 Ability to read and comprehend engineering drawings and specifications.

 Respond tactfully to requests and inquiries from the general public.

 Speak and relate ideas to engineering staff.

 Establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.

 Maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities, which may include:

          Excessive standing and walking during construction activities.

          Moderate lifting and carrying of equipment, tools, etc. up to 60 pounds.

          Moderate climbing on rough terrain, through excavated areas and trenches.

          Frequent driving to and from work sites.

          Surveying in the field.

    

Maintain effective audio-visual discrimination and perception needed for:

          Making observations.

          Communicating with others.

          Reading and writing.

          Sensory discrimination and attention to detail in construction zones.

          Using a computer and reviewing engineering plans, plats and maps.

Possess a valid driver’s license

NOTES:

Additional Salary Information: 40 hours per week
