Principal Systems Engineer

The candidate for Scientist, Systems Engineering must possess strong technical and communication skills.   Reporting into the Manager of Beam Director Systems Engineering, the Systems Engineer will conduct functional systems engineering tasks including requirements development and requirements management, will support the generation of system architectures and system trade studies, and will provide technical leadership of small teams developing system designs.

Essential Functions:

  • Elicit customer requirements
  • Lead development of system concepts and architectures
  • Derive the system requirements
  • Develop models of system effectiveness
  • Provide technical leadership of a diverse team executing clean\-sheet designs
  • Perform systems engineering processes including requirements management and system validation & verification
  • Support business development through writing white papers, developing and presenting briefs, direct interactions with customers, and proposal writing
  • Perform other duties as assigned
  • Provide technical leadership and oversight to multiple cross-disciplinary Engineering design teams.  Teams will be tasked with developing various types of ruggedized opto-mechanical and electro-optical systems and technologies.
  • Prepare and review schedules, specifications, process standards, and other contract documentation in order to plan the successful execution of multi-year, multi-million dollar development efforts.


    • Bachelor of Science in Physics or Engineering
    • 12+ years of experience in relevant prototype development and production required, experience hardware development for aerospace applications is strongly preferred, 10+ years with Master’s degree.
    • Must have the ability to obtain a US Secret Clearance.

      Preferred Additional Skills:

      • Master’s Degree strongly preferred.
      • Experience working on aerospace programs or systems preferred
      • Experience in electro\-optics, dynamical control systems, image processing and IRST-like algorithms, and/or avionics systems integration and test are preferred attributes.
      • Strong written and oral communication skills
      • Must be results oriented
      • Good interpersonal skills, ability to work well with others and establish effective, ongoing relationships throughout the organization
