Job Summary:

The Principal Scientist, Innovation will lead Innovation Core & Research projects in the area of physical biochemistry for diagnostics from conceptualization/ideation to design, planning, prototyping, execution, analysis, and reporting of hands-on laboratory experiments. In this highly-technical, principal hands-on role based in our Bothell, WA chemistry site you will work with the Innovation Core, Biologics, Engineering, Systems Integration, Chemistry, and other inter-disciplinary groups to drive innovation projects across a broad range of areas including chemistries, oligos, enzymes, assays, consumables, and systems for early-stage in vitro diagnostic R&D activities.

This role is critical for securing and advancing Cepheid€™s position as the leading provider of integrated molecular diagnostic solutions by contributing to ideation through proof-of-concept of key new biochemistry and assay technologies. This will enable Cepheid to stay on top of the latest technologies and innovations in an effort to deliver a better way to improve patient outcomes. 

The ideal candidate is an innovative, talented, agile, and dedicated physical biochemist/molecular biologist with a broad knowledge in physical and analytical chemistries including DNA/DNA, DNA/RNA, and RNA/RNA interactions with enzymes & proteins. The candidate should ideally be familiar with a variety of PCR enzymes and PCR techniques and be able to create working models for a new biochemical systems such as enzyme performance evaluation and characterization. The candidate should be interested in joining a dynamic and intellectually challenging team with a central scope & requirement to evaluate new research opportunities and propose new research projects that will transform Cepheid€™s development and innovation product pipeline.

In addition to deep technical qualifications, the ideal candidate will be highly goal-oriented, organized, and able to thrive in an atmosphere of shifting demands and priorities. The candidate should be extremely proactive with a curious attitude and able to thrive in the face of ambiguity; an innate systems-level thought process for coordinating a large number of technically varying initiatives is key. The ability to solve complex problems by taking a broad perspective to identify innovative solutions while being self-driven with guidance provided in only the most complex of situations is a must.

As a principal innovation team member, management and ownership of entire research projects is expected. As such, the candidate should possess excellent oral and written communication skills and the ability to work in a cross-functional team-based environment as well as with outside collaborators and companies. Finally, the principal scientist is expected to be a subject-matter expert in their area with coaching and mentoring of other innovation team members as well as support of ongoing product development efforts such as internal Cepheid assay Biologics development teams.

Essential Job Responsibilities:

  • Review, analyze, and access new physical chemistry/physical biochemistry technologies for improved molecular diagnostic performance in exemplary areas such as sample-to-answer diagnostic assay speed, multiplexing, and sample preparation
  • Effectively leverage scientific literature, databases and patents to design new chemical tools and other technologies that enable improved or new functionalities for DNA/RNA/protein detection
  • Propose new research projects and chemical technologies that enable Cepheid to realize its strategic vision in the areas of infectious disease, oncology, and genetics
  • Design and conduct feasibility studies for alternate enzymes and proteins for sample-to-answer diagnostic assays including hot-start capabilities
  • Facilitate technical problem solving through proposed experimentation and alternate designs/approaches
  • Perform hands-on laboratory work in both chemistry and biological labs to screen materials, approaches, designs, and processes in an efficient manner to down-select from many to a few best options
  • Prepare, handle, and processes a wide range of chemical & biological materials from buffers to simulated clinical matrix to blood
  • Work independently in a cross-disciplinary environment to design, plan, and execute prototype builds, perform laboratory experiments, and operate specialized test equipment
  • Provide mentorship and technical training to other Innovation Core team members as well as serve as a consultant & mentor for biologics assay developers
  • Prepare presentation materials and reports to communicate project status to key stakeholders, site management and upper management
  • Perform statistical experimental data analysis
  • Perform lab and office administrative tasks, including lab organization, equipment acquisition, and experimental reports/presentations
  • Maintain organized and complete documentation of activities, and provide regular updates covering progress, problems, and solutions
  • Ensure compliance to Quality System requirements
  • Communicate effectively across organizational functions

    Minimum Requirements:

    Education or Experience

    • Bachelor€™s degree with 8+ years of related work experience OR
    • Master€™s degree in field with 6+ years of related work experience OR
    • Doctoral degree in field with 3+ years of work experience.
      • Degree in Physical Biochemistry or Molecular Biology with +10 years of relevant industrial experience OR equivalent combination of education and experience
      • Post-doctoral and/or relevant experience in industry preferred

        Knowledge and Skills:

        • Must have strong background in physical chemistry, physical biochemistry, molecular biology and/or analytical chemistry techniques
        • Must have strong ability to choose successful strategic directions for the development of novel chemistries, assays, and techniques 
        • Must have strong initiative to complete challenging tasks with strong creative and analytical abilities
        • Highly motivated and results-driven individual with a passion for working in a fast-paced and evolving organization

        • Demonstrated core biology/chemistry/biochemistry laboratory skills including preferred hands-on experience with PCR or other similar molecular analysis techniques
        • Understanding of fluorescence and other optical detection technologies
        • Advanced statistics knowledge, including proficiency in the use of software for data analysis and presentation, experience with Minitab or JMP preferred
        • Working knowledge of design of experiments (DOE)
        • Must have strong skills designing effective PowerPoint Presentations and Excel work sheets along with proficiency with the full Microsoft Office software suite
        • Experience in a design-controlled, quality-systems driven environment including familiarity with FDA and ISO 13485 standards

          Physical Demands:

          • Must be able to perform routine laboratory tasks
          • Some minimal travel (10% or less) is expected including to our Sunnyvale, CA and Sweden locations as well as external collaborators as needed

            Preferred Requirements:

            • Experience with Matlab and/or Python a plus
            • Experience with DNA/RNA analysis software a plus
            • Deep knowledge of PCR, real-time PCR, qPCR, and other molecular analysis techniques a plus
