**Principal Human Centered Design Researcher**

The Innovation Labis an internal experience, design, and strategy consulting team at Medtronic. We use methods of empathy building and needs definition along with creative ideation and prototyping/testing practices to deliver the economic value for Medtronic business units (BU) globally.


**Position Description:**


As a Design Researcher on the Innovation Lab team you will work alongside experienced designers, facilitators, and strategists. This role is to champion design research methodologies and support the teams mission for Human Centered Design (HCD) in healthcare device design.


You will lead research sprints through a human-centered design process, guiding teams to frame design challenges, build empathy in end users, and translate collected data into actionable insights. This role will support front-end exploration through activities such as: contextual observation, qualitative discussions with end users, and preliminary concept evaluation.


The role will collaborate with the various RD and business functions on high impact initiatives to create innovative health care solutions that address the core needs of all of our customers and users. The output of your work provides a fluid transfer into continued development by building clarity of the higher-level purpose and vision of the potential value to the end user and Medtronic.


**Position Responsibilities**


Lead and execute research sprints with Medtronic BU teams in the field and/or provide guidance for execution.


Scope research and HCD activities and deliverables with BU upstream marketing and technology leads


Develop design research strategies that explore conceptual use scenarios through contextual inquiry and observations.


Generate and optimize research materials such as; recruitment processes, screeners, interview stimuli, and discussion guides.


Synthesize data and generate research reports. Emphasis on how the design research outcomes are impactful to Medtronic business goals and end users.


Communicate compelling stories that make research findings relevant and impactful to BU Project teams in a variety of formats such as: presentation decks, videos, posters, etc..


Expected travel up to 25%


**Must Have: Minimum Requirements**


+ Bachelors degree required

+ Minimum of 7 years of relevant experience, or advanced degree with a minimum of 5 years relevant experience


**Basic Requirements Preferred:**


Bachelors Degree in Marketing, Business, Psychology, Market Research, Design or related field


Experience with a focus on front end concept exploration and user facing testing.


Wants to make a big impact on how people experience healthcare through elegantly designed interactions


Strong creative problem solving and pattern recognition skills


Skilled facilitator who loves guiding groups through ambiguous and contentious scenarios by creating a safe space for collaboration and breakthroughs.


Curious, empathetic, creative and a continual learner


Demonstrates resourcefulness and creativity in problem solving with unconventional yet feasible ways to uncover insights with constrained resources


Is self-motivated and proactive, always thinking ahead for the team


Is dissatisfied with mediocrity and wants to be one-of-the-best in their field (SME)


Enjoys the benefit of working with a diverse and highly-skilled team


A strong candidate will present their work via portfolio, case studies, or other examples


**Technical Skills**


Proficient in Microsoft Suite (PPT, Word, Excel)


Experience with Adobe Creative Cloud programs (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, Acrobat) or other prototyping and visual tools is a plus.


Background in Healthcare and/or Medical Device preferred


**Design Research Skills**


Sense-making and pattern recognition


Critical thinking and creative problem solving


Data visualization and storytelling (personas, journey mapping)


Keen observer and fluid discussion manager


**Business Skills**


Experience in verbally presenting insights, ideas and concepts


Expertise in visually communicating insights, ideas, and concepts


Resource planning, project timelines, proposal generation


Consulting experience desired.
