Job summary
Amazon Web Services is seeking a Principal Energy Storage Engineer to become part of a global engineering team, responsible for the implementation and technical evaluation of our designs and the continuous innovation of our rapidly expanding data center footprint. This role will be primarily focused on the design and implementation of energy storage systems.

We are looking for an engineer with hands on experience designing and deploying grid scale energy storage systems on the power grid and/or commercial/industrial facilities. AWS Engineers design world class resilient power systems and we are innovating by integrating energy storage into our designs. In this role, you will work with the Principals and the Senior Global Electrical Engineers to integrate energy storage into the standard designs across the globe. You will participate in the evaluation, research and development of new storage technologies. You will be also responsible for writing technical documentation for such projects. You must be capable of defining equipment specifications and approving equipment submittals. Engineers will directly support construction and be a part of the process from site selection review through commissioning and ultimately turnover. You will be relied on as a subject matter expert in energy storage systems. At Amazon we highly support continued learning opportunities and focus on continued employee development.

As an engineer at Amazon you will be working with other internal groups as well as external groups including utilities, manufacturers, vendors, and contractors.
The positions flexible from a location perspective across the USA, preferred locations are Seattle, Washington ( Virginia) or Texas but other cities were AWS has office are also acceptable.

Key job responsibilities

  • Be a leader within the global group as well as within internal and external teams that support our data centers.
  • Capture requirements and turn aspirational company or customer goals into well-defined, achievable and testable specifications and solutions.
  • Evaluate storage technologies in the context of data center MV electrical systems
  • Development of design proposals which meet or exceed our quality requirements and fall within our budgetary requirements.
  • Collaborate and design with teams or individuals from other disciplines, cultures and countries to create a construction document set.
  • Work with power utilities to define requirements for storage systems.
  • Work with global vendors and manufacturers to define and specify the next generation of storage hardware.
  • Define project scope and provide technical support for information requests prior to, and during research and development projects.
  • Work with commissioning teams to properly test and validate installation, operation, and performance of electrical systems.
  • Communicate clearly and effectively at the appropriate level of detail with people from a wide range of technical abilities and backgrounds.
  • Produce clear and concise documentation such as detailed design specifications, functional test scripts, reports and version release notes.
  • Understand and safeguard implementation of the Global Electrical Basis of Design (BoD) with constant auditing.
  • Travel to sites for site review and work with onsite field engineers, as well as provide engineering evaluations and electrical systems audits as needed.
  • Ability to work on concurrent projects in multiple geographical regions.
  • Having fun and offering creative, out of the box solutions.


Bachelor€™s degree in electrical or chemical engineering (or similar). - 10+ years of experience with power systems and electrical design, including energy storage designs. - Expertise in the design and construction of batteries and storage systems. - - Project management experience. - Experience mentoring/ training the engineering community on complex technical issues. - Possess leadership and problem solving skills.


Master€™s degree or higher in electrical engineering, chemical engineering or similar. - 15+ years of relevant design experience. - Direct experience with the construction, operation, or maintenance of large scale energy storage systems. - Understanding of medium and low voltage electrical systems. - Experience with fast track design/build projects and or multiple significant upgrade projects. - Experience with large-scale technical operations or large-scale compute farms. - Possess excellent communication skills, attention to detail, maintain high quality standards. - Experience mentoring/ training the engineering community on complex technical issues. - Possess leadership and problem solving skills
