Principal Automation & Manufacturing Engineer

Leads the engineering assessment; design and development of complex manufacturing automation and other electromechanical systems.


Primary Job Function:

1. Translates system-level requirements into new technology solutions - Responsible for developing customer needs and product requirements. Responsible for translating customer needs and product requirements into Subsystem or System Specifications.  Responsible for overall System Analysis and System Architecture and uses technical knowledge and experiences to identify alternative architecture approaches.

2. Design -Leads and coordinates efforts of engineering design reviews with CFT and provides technical direction. Applies advanced engineering design techniques. Responsible for overall system design; ensures design solutions are optimized and addresses cross-functional requirements. Uses technical knowledge and experiences to identify alternative design approaches. Creates or modifies designs by integrating multiple design approaches to solve problems or optimize solutions for component or subsystem.

3. Develops Simulations & Prototypes - Develops simulations and prototypes new or modified designs and ensures appropriate component and system level testing is performed.  Improving the design-to-build development cycle. 

4. Implements the design of new manufacturing processes and equipment or improvements - Implements the design for components or complex subsystems or systems and ensures designs are compatibility with overall system design. Provides technical oversight for updating / creating detailed design specifications for components; subsystems and systems.

5. Verifies Solution - Ensures the integration and verification strategies are sufficient and adequate system testing is performed including regression analysis/testing.

6. Documenting and Managing Change - Justifies changes; quality and regulatory information; and manufacturing readiness information. Completes change documentation to include technical rationale and formal verification test results.

7. Advances Engineering Expertise - Advances technical and functional area expertise. Recommends improvements to Engineering policies and procedures.

8. Anticipates and/or Develops/Applies Risk Mitigation - Evaluates Technical risks; identifies engineering design alternatives; develops contingency plans and recommends actions. Responsible for the development and review of Risk Management documentation. Provides input into Risk Management including FMEAs; identifying hazards and modes of control.

9. Collaborates across functional areas - Interprets; presents; and delivers information with senior team members; scientists; engineers; and other systems development personnel across sites.

10. Ensures quality through design Techniques and Design Alternatives - Leads and participates in Engineering Design Reviews; provides technical direction and coordinates efforts of Engineering subsystem and System Design Reviews. Provides design recommendation. identifies design alternatives. Ensures design; product; interfaces; specifications; and/or service are consistent; compatible with overall design and performance requirements. Performs independent reviewer role for discipline area as well as related disciplines.

11. Performs Investigations -Leads investigations and provides technical oversight to determine root cause for complex issues. Arrives at timely conclusions.

12. Maintains adherence to the Quality System -Implements and maintains the effectiveness of the quality system. Follows functional area policies and procedures. Provides technical input for functional area to policies and procedures. Utilizes appropriate experimental; statistical and engineering tools.

13. Obtains Customer Feedback for new and/or Improve Products - Obtains; provides; and integrates input into product from external sources and other internal and external customers to achieve engineering goals. Solicits feedback to better understand unmet market needs for product improvements or new products from technology experts and from the commercial organization.

14. Selects; builds and maintain Third Party Manufacturer (TPM) product and partner relationship - For Third Party Manufacturer products; leads the assessment of the proposed design and verification of subsystem or system to meet corresponding System requirements. Evaluates vendor / TPM capabilities. Builds and maintains relationships.

15. Strategic Orientation - Ensures plans and resources are focused on site and division priorities. Works with cross functional team in collaborative environment.

16. Leads and Mentors - Trains and mentors engineers in engineering advances; tools and processes.



Acts largely independently for engineering activities, receives general direction from senior leadership. Plans, leads and implements multiple complex engineering programs at the same time.

Ensures project risks are addressed and appropriate technical skills are assigned.

Receives limited direction. Completes complex assignments and provides work direction to the CFT and Engineers.

Participates in hiring decisions for engineering resources; identifies and mentors emerging engineering resources requirements and provides inputs to Engineering Managers.

Establishes and reviews complex engineering plans for multiple projects. Provides input on engineering workload across projects and ensures appropriate technical skills are assigned to project. Ensures engineering plans; activities and resources are focused on Site and Division priorities.

Demonstrated ability of engineering development with a history of successful new or improved product releases.


Minimum Education

Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or technical discipline, advanced degree desired, plus demonstrated advanced competence  


Minimum Experience

Applies engineering technical knowledge for multiple complex engineering disciplines for subsystem or system development.

Technical leaders for successful design and launch of complex engineering processes and/or equipment. 

In depth knowledge and understanding of multiple products or disciplines. Advanced knowledge of external regulations and standards affecting IVDs and biologics.

7+ or more years progressive work experience with degree or sufficient transferable experience to demonstrate functional equivalence to a degree.


Desired Experience

Advanced degree in an engineering or closely related discipline preferred.

Specify, support the design, build, installation and on market support of filling and labeling equipment.

Expertise in the design, build and integration of vision inspection systems for components, assemblies and labels. 

Experience with PLC programming & troubleshooting – familiarity with Allen Bradly & Siemens preferred.

Experience with label development software a plus.
