  • The Physician Assistant works as a part of a surgeon/physician assistant team, providing care for the cardiothoracic surgical patient throughout the surgical care continuum (pre-operative, intra-operative, and post-operative follow-up)
  • Provides first and second assistance for all cardiovascular, thoracic, and vascular procedures
  • Performs specific technical procedures as delegated by attending surgeon
  • The Physician Assistant works in collaboration with other MHI and Hospital team members
  • Pre-Operative Care: review patients’ medical histories and diagnostic studies prior to surgery
  • Provide first and second assistance for all cardiovascular/ thoracic procedures
  • Perform specific technical procedures as delegated by the attending surgeon for all cardiovascular and thoracic cases, including, but not limited to: reviewing patients’ charts prior to the start of the case and assisting with preparing and surgical draping of the patient
  • Setting up cardiopulmonary bypass lines and other necessary equipment pertinent to the operation
  • Harvesting saphenous vein or radial artery for coronary artery grafting; check for hemostasis and subsequent suturing of tissue layers and skin
  • Performing chest wall and incision closure
  • Prior to surgery, review patient charts for consent, allergies, x-rays, diagnostic test results, history and physical and any potential problems
  • Assist surgeon during procedure demonstrating a clear understanding of surgical anatomy, retracting, cauterizing, sponging, knot tying and suturing
  • Apply dressing and assist with transfer of the patient to ICU bed and observe patient for potential problems, ie. excessive bleeding
  • Post-operative care in the ICU and telemetry, in collaboration with CT surgeons.
  • Post-operative clinic, as needed.
  • Develops, implements and evaluates the plan of care based upon individual patient and family assessment including age and other specific needs


  • Graduation from an accredited Physician Assistant (PA) program, Masters Degree preferred



  • 3 – 5 years of Cardiothoracic Surgical PA experience, or equivalent experience as PA in Cardiovascular – Thoracic setting


  • Sound knowledge of adult cardiovascular health, cardiovascular and thoracic anatomy, cardiovascular and thoracic surgical techniques, and related diagnostic and clinical therapies
  • Ability to work as part of a surgeon/physician assistant dyad in surgery, hospital unit, and clinic settings
  • Excellent teamworking abilities
  • Professional image via appearance and conduct
  • Ability to communicate effectively with patients, staff, physicians, and the public; advanced physical and psychosocial health assessment skills
  • Ability to teach patients, families, staff, and students; knowledge of research methodologies


  • Formal education as a physician assistant in an area consistent with the patient population served
  • Current Physician Assistant Registration in the State of Minnesota
  • Certification as a physician assistant by NCCPA
  • Minnesota prescriptive authority and DEA licensure
  • Must have a physician assistant supervisory agreement with MHI Cardiothoracic Surgeon specifying delegated prescriptive privileges
  • ACLS certification preferred

Work Schedule

40 hours/week with 1 weeknight of call and every 5 weekend of call; either OR or weekend rounding.
