The Northwest Pediatric Environmental Health Specialty Unit (PEHSU) provides health care providers, government officials, educators, and families with telephone consultation on health risks associated with environmental exposures.

The PEHSU has an outstanding Part-Time Pediatric Environmental Health Medical Consultant position. The work location is the UW Department of Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences offices at 4225 Roosevelt Way NE.


General Duties/Description

With guidance as needed, the Pediatric Environmental Health Medical Consultant will respond to pediatric environmental health inquiries from health care providers, public health professionals, parents, community members, the media, scientists, legislators, and others.  Possible pediatric environmental health consultation exposure topics are lead, wildfire smoke, pesticides, allergens, marijuana, chemicals in drinking water and consumer products, and others.  NW PEHSU pediatricians and other team members will mentor the successful candidate in developing competency in the field of pediatric environmental health.

Specific Responsibilities

Respond to PEHSU inquiries.  Define the question, research the request as needed, seek input from the PEHSU team (pediatricians, MPH-trained nurse educator), and provide evidence based guidance including risk communication
Research and analyze pediatric environmental health scientific literature, ability to summarize findings
Translate published environmental health research for clinicians, public health professionals and the public

Requirements

College graduate: BS, BA in nursing or related field
Registered nurse:  RN and one year of experience
Advanced study in environmental studies, environmental health (pediatric environmental health a plus)(experience may substitute for education)
Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills.

Desired Qualifications

MS or MPH
ARNP
Experience with medical consultation
Work well as part of a team
Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines
Ability to self-motivate and work independently

NW PEHSUs mission is to improve child health outcomes through consultation and education on harmful environmental exposures.  NW PEHSU provides telephone consultation services to clinicians, public health professionals, parents and others on pediatric reproductive health.  Established in 1997 and based at UW, the Northwest Pediatric Environmental Health Specialty Unit responds to approximately 175 inquires annually.
