The School of Nursing, Simulation Center, has an outstanding opportunity for a part-time (50%) Pediatric Clinical Nurse Educator. This position will collaborate with faculty and Simulation Center Staff to provide nursing students with simulated “real-life” experiences to develop assessment, practice, and diagnostic skills in a safe setting.

The role requires the ability to:
•Operationalize the clinical simulation teaching experience in the School of Nursing
•Provide academic activities to facility the success of all students in simulated clinical experience
•Interface effectively with School of Nursing faculty, staff, and students prepared at varying levels of education and expertise, an interdisciplinary university community, and multiple entities and systems within the larger external environment

Overview of the Simulation Center: The School of Nursing Simulation Center provides students with the opportunity to translate theoretical knowledge into a safe clinical experience using realistic patient scenarios. The Center provides students with “real-life” experiences, enhancing their confidence and providing real-time human and technological feedback about the development of their practice assessment, diagnostic skills, and communication techniques. The work of the director is integral to the Center’s success and vital to the School’s mission and strategic goals in educating nursing professional to provide the citizens of the State of Washington with the best possible health care and preparing future leaders to improve health.

Roles and Responsibilities:

Academic Support:

Assists in developing, presenting, and evaluating clinical simulation coursework on specific skills and/or techniques to students at all levels in collaboration with faculty

Applies learning strategies used in clinical simulation and learning by:

Implementing a skills remediation program for students

Assuring scheduled, supervised skills practice sessions

Implementation, maintenance of standardized-patient program

Provides organized, best-practice teaching and learning environment for faculty and students

Provides orientation to Simulation Center users regarding behavioral expectations, performance standards, and appropriate safety measures

Evaluates basic nursing skills of undergraduate and graduate nursing students

Assists in helping students as necessary with course skills

Implements and evaluates UW SoN curricula related to clinical nursing education and simulation

Advises and consults with faculty and staff in UW SoN and health sciences

Serves as resource to faculty in the integration of simulation into the nursing curriculum


Operational Support:


Collaborates with Simulation Center staff and SoN faculty in the execution of simulation courses in regards to student attendance and performance, curriculum, supply and staffing needs, and evaluations

Works cooperatively with technology, library, and other instructional support resources to maintain up-to-date facilities and technology resources for students

Implements, participates in, and contributes to a safe learning environment; keeps current with safety regulations, provides training and enforcement of safety regulation policies and procedures; inspects and maintains safety equipment; ensures safe storage, collection, and safe disposal of hazardous waste/materials, including medications

Models and instructs faculty, staff, and students in the safe use of all equipment

Oversees purchasing/inventory/equipment maintenance; works with vendors regarding instructional material, equipment and supplies to assure most pedagogically-sound and cost-effective equipment for student use


Miscellaneous:

Perform other duties as required to support the ongoing mission and strategic plans of the School

REQUIREMENTS:

•Master’s degree or higher in a nursing related field
•Minimum 2-3 years of expertise working as an RN in the care of the pediatric patient in the acute care and/or outpatient setting
•Knowledge and experience in the subject of nursing skills
•Teaching experience including experience in simulation preferred
•Ability to work independently and as part of a team
•Ability to solve problems creatively
•Strong interpersonal and conflict resolution skills
•Strong customer service skills

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except where there are legal requirements such as license/certification/registration.

Certifications:
•Current Washington State Registered Nurse license
•BLS certification; BLS instructor certification preferred
•PALS certification preferred
•Complete necessary Simulation related training within one month of hire
