The payroll tax accountant is responsible for performing several general accounting functions, overseeing AP, multi-state payroll/local taxes, as well as assisting the Corporate Controller in ensuring that controls are in place for accurate financial reporting.   The payroll tax accountant is also responsible for accurate and timely tax preparation and reporting for the company. 



  • Identify and process all state, city and local payroll withholding taxes to ensure that reporting and payments are issued in a timely and accurate manner on a weekly, monthly, quarterly, and annual basis.

  • Administers and reconciles tax reports for sales tax, use tax, State Unemployment Insurance (SUI) for multiple states.

  • Collaborate with outside accountants for the completion of various state and local income tax returns.

  • Identify and set-up new tax accounts based on corporate activity in new locations. This includes new setup in the accounting system, coordination with the appropriate taxing agencies, obtaining all required documentation, and maintaining up to date information in the accounting systems on an ongoing basis.

  • Assist the Corporate Controller to maintain up to date corporate licensing and registration in all localities in which the company has activity.

  • Manage/Process Corporate Credit Card Accounts

  • Periodically assist in reviewing contracts for various stipulations for which the company will be bound.

  • Act as an informational financial resource for the leadership team and communicates any discrepancies or issues. 

  • Assist with the monthly, quarterly, and annual closing process to deliver completed profit & loss statements, balance sheets and cash flow statements. 

  • Reconcile various general ledger accounts including taxes, employee withholding, employee withholding accounts, all cash and checking accounts for all corporate locations.

  • Prepare monthly journal entries and general ledger postings and other duties as assigned by Corporate Controller or CFO.

  • Assist with audits as necessary; prepares and provides requested information to external auditors.

  • Track and generate reports on employee payroll advances for monthly review and collection.

  • Maintain and appropriately stores accounting files, correspondence, and other records of relevance to the business operation.

  • Maintain and control petty cash to disburse as required and reconcile.

  • Perform special projects for the CFO, Controller, owners and/or leadership team as needed.



  • Experience:  5+ years of previous accounting work experience with multi location tax reporting, and knowledge of general accounting principles.  Construction background is a plus. 

  • Education:   Bachelors Degree in Accounting preferred.

  • Self-starter with excellent communication skills between internal and external business partners.

  • Computer Skills: Proficient in Accounting ERP Systems and familiar with Microsoft Office Products (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook)

  • Ability to collaborate well with employees at all levels of the organization and business partners; be an influence without direct authority and build strong relationships across teams.

  • Maintain confidentiality in all aspects of the company and its operations and be a trustworthy keeper of Company assets.
