Responsibilities

  • Greet and welcome patients
  • Access account
  • Check in or interview patient
  • Direct patient to appointment/procedure or give instructions
  • Verify eligibility and benefit information for payers and work assigned work queues
  • Collect financial obligations from patients and provide financial counseling when appropriate
  • Assist with site training
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned
  • Identify accuracy trends

Education

  • High school diploma or GED

Qualification/Skills

Experience

  • 1-2 years general office experience required
  • 1 year customer service experience required
  • Experience working in a high volume, fast-paced environment
  • Experience working with customers to gather data

Skills

  • Proficient in use of PC - including Word, Excel spreadsheets, and Outlook E-mail
  • Must be fully proficient in Excellian and insurance verification including Healthia and insurance websites
  • Knowledge of the components of revenue cycle
  • Friendly and welcoming to patients
  • Ability to develop immediate phone rapport with a wide variety of customers
  • Experience collecting money
  • Comfortable asking for money in person or over the phone
  • Ability to respond to basic questions about Allina financial assistance programs
  • Demonstrate basic knowledge of English, spelling grammar and communication skills
  • Customer oriented, must always act in a positive, professional manner
  • Strong communication skills, diplomacy and empathy
  • Ability to de-escalate basic situations including patient complaints

Work Schedule

This Patient Access Specialist - Associate position will be scheduled for evening and overnight shifts in the Emergency Department and St. Francis Urgent Care. Shift start times may range from 11am to 11pm. This role also serves to call hospital-wide codes.
