The Department of Medicine has an outstanding opportunity for a Paramedic Program Director.

The Director of the University of Washington (UW) Michael K. Copass, MD Paramedic Training Program is responsible for strategic planning and oversight of all administrative and educational elements for the program.  The Training Program has the substantial responsibility to train resourceful and high-achieving paramedics for the region.   Specifically, the objective of the Paramedic Training Program is to educate and train paramedic students to attain advanced knowledge, experience, and skills to evaluate and effectively treat medical emergencies in the pre-hospital setting as mobile intensive care paramedics. Secondarily, it is the role of the Training Program to supervise and manage all currently certified King County paramedics as the single EMS Provider Supervisory Organization. As a leadership position, the Program Director is expected to exercise independent judgment, solve complex problems, and develop innovative approaches in training paramedic students.    The Paramedic Director position requires an ability to direct and manage multiple priorities, effectively analyze a range of educational situations, and make sound decisions using effective time management skills, good business acumen, and balanced administrative judgement.  The Director must have excellent personnel management skills and must have strong organizational ability.  The Director must be able to work independently and collaboratively with multiple stakeholders to  achieve the goals of the Paramedic Program and School of Medicine.

The Paramedic Director is a leadership position that is part of the UW Department of Medicine and the overarching UW School of Medicine.  The Department has a broad ranging mission that includes clinical care, training and education, and medical research as part of a comprehensive effort to improve health.  The Department of Medicine is the largest department in the School of Medicine with over 4500 staff, faculty, trainees and students and an annual budget of approximately $425,000,000 consisting of patient care revenue, sponsored research funds, endowments and gifts, state funds and affiliated hospital funding associated with the academic programs within the department. The department is made up of thirteen sub-specialty divisions that  occupy space at multiple sites including University of Washington Medical Center, Harborview Medical Center, Veterans Administration Puget Sound Health Care System, Puget Sound Blood Center, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, Seattle Cancer Care Alliance , and other locations in the Seattle area.  The Paramedic Director is expected to interface effectively with the range of stakeholders, locations, and programs across the Department and the School of Medicine to achieve an effective educational Training Program.

The Paramedic Program involves a dynamic environment.  The Program is hosted at Harborview Medical Center and by the Seattle Fire Department.  The Program has educational sites at HMC, UWMC, OHMC, ALNW, Seattle Children's, Bellevue Children's, KC Medical Examiner's Office, Kidney Center, Bainbridge Island FD, and all 5 Seattle/King County Paramedic Agencies, including Seattle FD, Shoreline FD, Redmond FD, Bellevue FD, and King County Medic One.  The Program Director will coordinate and oversee the Program’s involvement with each of these educational sites and organizations.

The Director must be committed to the goals and missions of the School of Medicine and the University.  The Paramedic Training Program has a long history as an important community service for the Northwest.  The Program has a national reputation specifically for the state-of-the-art curriculum and training provided by its faculty and staff.

The Program Director will be responsible for all aspects of the program, including, but not limited to Operational Management, Didactic Training, Strategic Planning, and Development and Community Relations:

Operations and Planning Management

The Program Director will be responsible for:

  • Overall administration, organization, and supervision of the educational program
  • Quality review and improvement of the educational program to include systems that demonstrate program  effectiveness
  • Short and long-term strategic planning of the program to assure a well-supported program that fully achieves regional and national requirements for well-trained paramedics.
  • Collaborative involvement with the medical director
  • Orientation of and collaboration with clinical & field internship organizations and preceptors
  • Constructive analysis and resolution of concerns and issues that may arise with Program stakeholders
  • Supervision of Assistant Program Director and Program administrative staff.  Decisions regarding employment of the Program’s professional and classified staff will be made in concert with leadership from the Department of Medicine and the Seattle Fire Department.  These personnel employment activities will comply with Department, School, University and State personnel policies and procedures.
  • Coordination of paramedic student progress and promotions in collaboration with leadership from the sponsoring paramedic agency, Department of Medicine, Seattle Fire Department, and the Washington State Department of Health.
  • Development and management of the Program budget and finances.
  • Maintenance of Program policies and procedures that are consistent with UW policy and practice.

    Didactic Teaching and Direct Student Support

    The Program Director will oversee and be responsible for the Program’s curriculum.  In addition to organization and supervision as described in Operational Management, the Director will:

  • Participate directly in classroom teaching and field training as part of a comprehensive educational program that achieves national and regional standards for paramedic certification.  This effort will involve classroom didactics on a range of clinical and professional topics as well as field experiences that may involve simulation and/or patients.  
  • Engage and meet with the paramedic students on a regular basis to assess individual educational progress.  The Director will create and manage student-specific improvement plans as needed.

    Development & Community Relations

    The Program Director has responsibility to work with the Program stakeholders to promote and assure constructive relationships with organizations that have interest or involvement with the Paramedic Training Program.  These duties will include but are not limited to:

  • Participation with the Medic One Foundation in their efforts to define, present, and advance the mission of Paramedic Training to potential donors and the general public.
  • Collaboration with community stakeholders
  • Develop and manage communication and outreach programs
  • Participate in fundraising and other supporting initiatives to benefit the Program mission.

    Responsible for all Staff HR and payroll activities and fiscal Management of grants, contracts.  Directly supervise staff accountable for the following:

  • Fiscal management
  • Education and training programs
  • Information Systems
  • Administrative support

    REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor’s degree from a 4 year graduate institution plus a minimum of 7 years work experience.

    Type of Experience Required:
  • Have appropriate medical or allied health education, training, and experience,
  • Be knowledgeable about methods of instruction, testing and evaluation of students, -have field experience in the delivery of out-of-hospital emergency care,
  • Have academic training and preparation related to emergency medical services at least equivalent to that of a paramedic
  • Be knowledgeable about the current versions of the National EMS Scope of Practice and National EMS Education Standards, and about evidenced-informed clinical practice. 

    DESIRED

  • Fire service based EMS experience. 
  • Current certification as Mobil Intensive Care Paramedic by the State of Washington. 
  • Experience with CAAHEP (Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs) and JRC (Joint
  • Review Committee on Education) accreditation compliance. 
  • Curriculum development experience, reflecting a diverse student base. 
  • Test writing and evaluation skills. 
  • Current Pediatric Advanced Life Support and Advanced Cardiac Life Support instructor certification. 
  • Experience in teaching the current National Paramedic curriculum.
  • Student counseling skills. 
  • Public speaking skills.
