GENERAL SUMMARY: Under minimal supervision, develops and implements individual and group occupational therapy programs for referred patients. Exercises independent judgment in selection of treatment methodology consistent with professional expertise, attending physician's prescription, and patient assessment for the purpose of restoring and enhancing functional independence. Performs these duties at the Hospital and assigned off-site facilities. Ensures quality and safe delivery of care to patients of all ages. PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 1. Reviews patient charts, interviews patient and family, consults physicians, nurses, and other treatment team members, and administers assessment procedures to evaluate patient psychosocial physical status and therapeutic needs. Establishes functional baseline to be used throughout treatment as a gauge of progress and psychosocial physical improvement. Establishes patient therapy goals which are consistent with physician's diagnosis and own assessment and are intended to bring patient to optimal functional independence. Formulates a treatment plan which is consistent with a) therapy goals, b) developmental models, and c) patient interests, existing skills, and mental/physical abilities. 2. Implements or directs implementation of established treatment plans. Conducts individual and/or group occupational therapy activities; facilitates and instructs patients in the skills necessary to successfully participate. Studies patients in therapy situations and continually evaluates their physical/emotional progress in order to determine, and affect alterations to, treatment plans. Establishes an effective working rapport with patients and interacts with them in a considerate and supportive manner. Instructs patients and families concerning therapy purposes and appropriate home care programs. 3. Documents care given patients, notes patient progress relative to treatment objectives, and confers with medical and nursing staff and other members of the health care team regarding appraisal of patient progress. Modifies treatment plans when considered advantageous to therapy purpose. Confers with patients, families, and other team members for discharge planning and effective home care; prepares discharge summary for patients detailing the degree of goal achievement; makes recommendations and referrals for appropriate follow-up treatment. 4. May supervise therapeutic activities assigned to COTA's and students, ensuring that they are performed safely, correctly, and according to instruction. May provide educational programs concerning occupational therapy to students, other Hospital personnel, and community groups. 5. Participates in departmental performance improvement. Remains abreast of developments in the field of occupational therapy and maintains professional skills through participation in appropriate educational/developmental activities and review of professional literature.




Qualifications:


KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE, AND OTHER JOB REQUIREMENTS: 1. Level of knowledge equivalent to that ordinarily acquired through completion of a Master's Degree in Occupational Therapy. Eligible for or Licensed as an Occupational Therapist in Massachusetts and Certification by AOTA. Previous experience in mental health field. 2. Three to six months of experience.
