Job Summary:

Must be enrolled in a BSN program, in good academic standing, and have completed at least one clinical rotation.

Reporting to the Clinical Manager or Nursing Coordinator and under the direct supervision of the Registered Nurse, the Nurse Technician is responsible for direct patient care of adult, geriatric,and sometimes adolescent and newborn patients as assigned. The limit and scope of care is defined by both Akron General Medical Center policy and procedures as well as provisions of Ohio Nurse Practice Act; Nurse Technicians may not perform those activities that require an RN or LPN license. As expected for all employees, the Nurse Technician is responsible for promoting and demonstrating the nursing caring standards and guest relations standards in the fulfillment of their his/her role.

 

  • Prepares unit, patient rooms and patient beds for receiving patient admission, returning surgical patient, transfer or emergencies.
  • Provides assigned care (bath, changing and/or refreshening of bed linen, dressing/undressing of patient, back rubs, etc.) and other general care throughout the day to assure patient's physical comfort.
  • As directed, takes and records temperature, pulse, respiration, blood pressure, weight, height and measures intake and output in an accurate and precise manner.
  • Assists with pre-operative and post-operative care, such as positioning patient, lifting and turning patient with proper body mechanics, applying/utilizing special equipment as necessary, and ambulating the patient as directed in a safe, prescribed manner.
  • Assists and accompanies patient in the admission, transfer and discharge process while assuring comfort.
  • Participates in nursing reports by receiving and contributing to status report of patients.
  • Performs treatment procedures, including but not limited to, enemas, applications of ice packs, skin care products, and heat, catheterization, sterile/ non-sterile compresses, skin preps, application of traction, bedscale weights and other therapeutic measures in a safe and effective manner.
  • Performs blood draws and glucose monitoring as directed.
  • Prepares patients for meals, assisting in feeding patient, if necessary, and distributes water and other nourishments according to patient needs.
  • Demonstrates understanding of emergency procedures, fire drills, evacuation and internal/external disaster plans and procedures.
  • Provides post-mortem care and transport of the body in a safe, precise manner.
  • Makes rounds willingly, anticipates patient needs and responds to patient call lights promptly.
  • Collects, properly labels and transports specimens to proper area in a timely manner.
  • Reports to appropriate nursing personnel pertinent information including any changes observed in condition or behavior of patient.
  • Assists in keeping patient rooms in order, reporting equipment that is out of order, cleaning equipment (as assigned) and distributing unit linen and supplies.
  • Consistently completes assignments independently with high quality work.
  • Adapts to change in workload or patient assignments.
  • Recognizes and responds to priorities in patient care.
  • Willingly cooperates with staff in delivery of more complex treatments and procedures.
  • Functions in an accurate and calm manner in emergency and crisis situations.
  • As directed, sets up and assists the physician with certain procedures, i.e., pelvic exams, suturing, set up of suture tray.
  • Observes, documents and reports to RN observations or findings indicating changes in patient's condition, i.e., specifically, vital signs, respiratory effort, sensorium. Performance and documentation of physical assessment is the responsibility of the Registered Nurse.
  • Documents patient care provided to patients (as outlined in policy H-5) on flow sheets and graphic sheets as assigned in an accurate, timely fashion.
  • Assists in orientation of Nurse Technicians and other personnel.
  • Recognizes and performs duties which need to be performed, although not directly assigned.
  • Demonstrates understanding of emergency procedures, fire drills, evacuation and internal/external disaster plans and procedures.
  • Attends inservice education programs as assigned; completes mandatory training and acquires CPR certification by required renewal dates.
  • Reports to registered nurses before leaving and when returning to the patient care unit.
  • Attends inservices, staff meetings and other meetings as requested.
  • Complies with Akron General Medical Center's policy for role of bedside caregiver when assigned.
  • Demonstrates satisfactory performance for established and new routines, procedures, skills and equipment.
  • Completes mandatory education and training in order to maintain organization and department specific competencies and requirements. Maintains applicable certification/licensure.
  • Other duties as assigned


    Education:

    • Must be a student in good standing in an accredited baccalaureate or diploma nursing program who has successfully completed at least one clinical course; or an unlicensed graduate of an accredited baccalaureate nursing program; or an LPN awaiting NCLEX results from a second state board exam.

        Complexity of Work:

        • Maintains competencies specific to patient population served.
        • Must satisfactorily complete hospital orientation.


          Work Experience:

          • Must meet the hospital's general requirements.
