Harborview Medical Center's O.R. has an outstanding leadership opportunity for RN3, Assistant Nurse Manager, Week-Ends (Fri./Sat./Sun., 12 hrs, with a rotating 8 hr during the week).
This role includes functioning as charge nurse, as well as providing education for week-end staff.

SUMMARY: Under general supervision of the OR Nurse Manager, the Weekend Charge, Assistant Nurse Manager (RNIII) uses his/her knowledge base of the Operating Room and font board to:

effectively and efficiently run the surgical case load
maximize case throughput
be available to staff to start the day
collaborate with the anesthesia attending in decisions effecting  scheduled and unscheduled
facilitate timely starts for all cases
ensure maximum efficiency in case turn-over
act as a liaison between anesthesia providers and surgeons
support and promote management philosophies

The Registered Nurse III performs specific leadership functions related to clinical practice, education, and/or management as delegated by and in collaboration with the OR Nurse Manager.  As assigned by the Nurse Manager, assumes staff assignments and preceptor responsibility.  Provides leadership for unit and departmental activities that promote

delivery of quality nursing care
effective problem solving and communication
continued professional development for self and others

Serves as role model and provides guidance to other staff including review and evaluation of performance.

Direct Patient Care Competencies/Standards of Practice

Unit Orientation
1. Mentors new employees and acts as secondary preceptor for new nurses.
2. Collaborates with OR Nurse Educator to develop, refine and implement unit specific clinical orientation programs.
3. Assists Nurse Educator to ensure that orientees are receiving continued support and exposure to relevant
clinical activities.
4. Assures that skills checklists, evaluations, competencies and pathways are completed in a timely manner.
5. Facilitates orientee access to and use of e-mail, peri-op charting, and voicemail.
6. Facilitates student and new employee orientation in conjunction with OR Nurse Educator.
Annual Mandatory Education
7. Facilitates unit based skills validation in conjunction with OR Nurse Educator.
8. Functions as a Qualified Observer for unit specific competencies.
Unit Specific Education
9. Assists with needs-assessment and planning unit-based education.
10. Implements and evaluates program in conjunction with OR Nurse Educator.
11. Facilitates introduction to new products and equipment to all staff.
12. Plans and attends inservices for all staff related to new products and equipment.

Human Resources Management
1.   Participates in the interview process for new applicants.
2.  Prepares annual evaluations for that represent all aspects of the performance and developmental goals of the    employees in a timely fashion.
3.  Provides appropriate and timely coaching.
4.  Collaborates with nurse manager to implement and monitor employee development.

Daily Operations
1. Manage case throughput and workflow for all cases to ensure maximum efficiency.
2.    Available and accessible to staff to help facilitate OR cases.
3.    Facilitates timely starts for all cases.
4.    Coordinate with other specialties (radiology, angio, etc.) to ensure on-time case starts.
5.    Ensures special instruments, supplies, implants and equipment are available upon request of surgeons.
6.    Facilitates maximum efficiency in room turn-over.
7.   Works with CPU staff to insure necessary instruments and supplies are available for scheduled cases.
8.   Communicates with PACU /ASU Charge Nurse to facilitate throughput.
Unit Operations
9. Functions within safety, infection control, emergency and equipment guidelines.
10. Performs delegated duties in absence of nurse manager.
11. Unit specific projects and assignments are completed in a timely manner without need for prompting.
12. Serves as a role model and mentor to staff.
13. Ensures patient property procedures are followed properly.
14. Alerts nurse manager to actual or potential problems in a timely manner.
15. Initiates/assists with projects, based on unit needs.
16. Acts as a liaison between anesthesia and surgeons.
17. Supports and promotes Management philosophies.
18. Communicates with Nurse Manager regarding problems and issues on the weekends and week days.
19. Supervises, supports, and works on special projects with hospital assistants.
20. Coordinates with staff and is in charge of the preassigned standby assignment schedule.
21. Participates in audits (formal and informal) to monitor unit standards.
22. Supports research activities.
Care Coordination
23. Facilitates and supports interdisciplinary care.
24. Recognizes ethical dilemmas and initiates use of appropriate resources.
25. Collaborates with patients, significant others, and health care providers in providing patient care.
26. Acts as an advocate for on-going care management initiatives.
27. Proactively facilitates discharge planning from the OR and anticipates obstacles and intervenes effectively.

Safety and Response to Emergencies
1. Demonstrates knowledge of emergency evacuation routes, location of MSDS information, locations of emergency information flipcharts.
2. Demonstrates knowledge of and responds to hospital-wide emergency codes.
3 Knows current location of and proper use of emergency equipment, emergency exits and FIRE alarms.
4. Maintains a safe work environment, including keeping floors free of clutter, securing electrical cords, and cleaning spills. 
5. Monitors for safety of patient and staff in the room.
6. Wears OSHA-approved personal protective equipment, including appropriate eye protection and x-ray coverage.
7. Demonstrates ability to set up and work in a crash room, including use of defibrillator.
8. Remains calm, accurately identifies emergency situations, offers assistance when emergencies arrive.

Patient Confidentiality and Dignity

3. Provides for patients privacy throughout perioperative period.
4. Protects dignity of patients throughout perioperative period.
5. Regards patient under general anesthesia with respect; models high standard for other team members to follow.

Quality Improvement
1. Assures Pre-Procedure Verification is performed for all procedures, and is documented on computer or paper charting as appropriate.
2. Identifies and reports verbally and online all unusual occurrences according to policy.
3. Participates in QA programs.

Scrub Nurse Skills
1. Demonstrates proficiency in the preparation of sterile field.
2. Prepares sterile setup, checks that proper supplies and equipment are available for case.
3. Performs needle counts and supply counts in accordance with departmental policy.
4. Demonstrates proficiency in knowledge of instrumentation, supplies and equipment.
5. Demonstrates knowledge of sterilization methods, including gravity and pre-vac steam, gas, Steris and Sterrad.
6. Performs draping as necessary.
7. Maintains sterile field and reports breaks in sterile field technique.

Charge Nurse         
1. Coordinates, organizes and assigns patient care delivery based on skill, staff, patient needs and cost containment issues.
2. Knows general description of patients on the unit and uses the information to make appropriate changes and to reprioritize as necessary.
3. Available to staff for consultation and assistance.
4. Reevaluates nursing team assignments to ensure patient care needs are met on an ongoing basis.
5. Monitors less experienced staff and gives direct feedback.
6. Ensures facility safety for patients and staff. 
7. Reports issues to appropriate persons consistently and in a timely fashion.
8. Utilizes chain of command appropriately.
9. Manages the OR Electronic Whiteboard effectively and efficiently.
10. Demonstrates calm, efficient demeanor; is tactful and positive.
11. Assists, resolves, or appropriately refers customer service issues.
12. Is courteous and helpful on the phone; identifying unit and self.
13. Follows up to be sure that shift activities are completed.
14. Utilizes and follows preassigned standby call guidelines
15. Coordinates with staff and is responsible for the preassigned standby call schedule.
