The Commons, located in Minneapolis, is the headquarters of Allina Health, a not-for-profit health care organization serving patients and communities. Approximately 1,600 corporate and administrative service employees work at offices within Midtown Exchange, the site of the historic Sears retail complex at Chicago Avenue and E. Lake Street. This community landmark, adjacent to the campus of Abbott Northwestern Hospital, part of Allina Health, is the second largest building in Minnesota and includes offices, an internationally themed public market and residential units.

  • Assesses patients on admission to the hospital . Performs and documents history and physical examination based on age and history on complex and chronically-ill patients
  • Rounds on hospitalized patients in various settings including acute care to advance the plan of care, reassesses as patient condition warrants. Updates and records changes in health status
  • Formulates the appropriate differential diagnoses based on the history, physical exam, and clinical findings
  • Formulates a plan of care to address complex, acute and chronic health care needs. Integrates knowledge of pathophysiology that pertains to acute and chronically ill patients to assist in planning and implementation of treatment
  • Synthesizes data from a variety of sources to make clinical judgments and decisions about appropriate recommendations and treatments
  • Assesses the impact of an acute, critical and/or chronic illness or injury on the individual’s: health status (physical and mental), functional status, including activity and mobility, nutritional status, sleep and rest patterns, quality of life, family, social, and educational relationships
  • Assesses patient/family bio/psycho/social needs considering physical and age-specific needs, recognizing the dynamic nature of the patient’s condition, and provides psychosocial support to patient and family members
  • Educates patients/families about self-management of acute and chronic illness with sensitivity to the patient's learning ability and cultural and ethnic background. Collaborates with health care team in ensuring that patient/family needs are met
  • Determines the need for laboratory and diagnostic studies, initiates orders, and interprets results. Initiates appropriate and timely consultation and/or referral when problem exceeds the nurse practitioner’s scope of practice and/or expertise
  • Employs appropriate diagnostic and therapeutic interventions and regimens with attention to safety, cost, invasiveness, simplicity, acceptability, adherence, and efficacy
  • Promotes collaboration among members ofthe multidisciplinary health care team to facilitate optimal care for complex acute and chronic patients
  • Incorporates health promotion, health protection and injury prevention measures into the plan of care within the context of the complex acute and chronic illness
  • Prescribes medication in accordance with practice agreement with the collaborating physician; prescribes appropriate pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic treatment modalities
  • Assesses for multiple interactive and synergistic effects of pharmacological agents, including over-the-counter (OTC) preparations and alternative and complementary therapies, in patients with complex acute and chronic illness
  • Facilitates the patient's transition between and within health care settings, such as admitting, transferring, and discharging patients; coordinates discharge plan and follow-up of patients in collaboration with the physician
  • Submits billing levels at time of visit or procedure.Completes consultation, transfer, and discharge summaries as needed
  • Assist with inpatient cross coverage calls from clinical staff
  • Assumes a leadership role in establishing and monitoring standards of advanced practice to improve patient care in collaboration with other experts as appropriate
  • Collaborates with physicians and other health care professionals as a participant in multidisciplinary quality improvement teams as assigned
  • Maintains current knowledge regarding state and federal regulations impacting NP practice
  • Utilizes internal resources (e.g. ethics committee, risk management, legal department) and external resources (e.g. professional organizations, government officials, community agencies) to facilitate the resolution of patient advocacy, moral, and ethical issues
  • Integrates the nurse practitioner role into systems, processes, and decision making to function fully within the health care team
  • Participates in medical and advanced practice research projects
  • Integrates research to promote evidence-based practice for patients with complex acute, critical, and chronic illness
  • Uses communication techniques that reflect attention to the needs of the patient/family based on patient age and other special need
  • Adapts performance of skills to meet the age and other population specific needs for patients/customers served
  • Develops, implements and evaluates the plan of care based upon individual patient and family assessment including age and other specific needs
  • Analysis of data reflects attention to age and other specific variables


  • Master's degree in Nursing required



  • Prefer at least 3-5 years nursing experience, preferred inpatient setting


  • Ability to work as part of a physician/nurse practitioner dyad
  • Excellent teamworking abilities; professional image via appearance and conduct
  • Ability to communicate effectively with patients, staff, physicians, and the public
  • Advanced physical and psychosocial health assessment skills
  • Sound knowledge of adult health, and related diagnostic and clinical therapies
  • Ability to teach patients, families, staff, and students; knowledge of research methodologies
  • Competent to function as preceptor
  • Able to demonstrate ability to deal with high acuity/complexity and rapidly changing situations


  • Formal education as a nurse practitioner in an area consistent with the patient population served
  • Current Registered Nurse License for the State of Minnesota
  • Certification as a nurse practitioner by appropriate professional organization
  • Minnesota prescriptive authority and DEA licensure
  • Must have a collaborative practice agreement with MHI Physician/Vascular Surgeon specifying medically delegated functions that may be performed by the nurse practitioner
  • ACLS certification preferred

Allina Health does not hire new grads from all academic institutions. Many proprietary on-line schools do not meet Allina Health’s standards due to the minimal oversight of the student’s clinical experience, the high faculty/student ratio, and the lack of focus on national certification standards in the curriculum.

Work Schedule

Seven 10 hour shifts / month 10pm - 8am
