The Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology serves as a regional resource for clinical laboratory services required for patient care, research and educational programs in laboratory medicine. The Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology - Chemistry Division has an outstanding opportunity for a full-time, night shift, MEDICAL LABORATORY SCIENTIST 2.

  • Understands and operates a variety of laboratory equipment that may require interpretive knowledge
  • Perform basic maintenance and troubleshooting measures
  • Understands and is able to use basic and advanced functions in the Laboratory Information System and teaches these functions to technologists and students as needed
  • Maintains sufficient skill with personal computers to use e-mail as a communication tool, to use Word for preparing and editing procedures, and Excel for data reduction
  • Knows the critical limits for all tests for which they are defined abd reports critical results to a licensed healthcare provider, and documents the information according to laboratory policy.
  • Assists the MLS Lead in maintaining and reviewing all aspects of Quality Assurance within the section
  • Works with the MLS Lead to review QC of the section at least weekly or as delegated
  • Uses good judgment to determine when QC indicates shift, drift or loss of precision that requires troubleshooting and takes appropriate action and informs the CTLead of significant issues
  • Works independently and manages heavy workloads, and will ask for help if needed
  • Maintains theoretical and technical expertise for all procedures within assigned section
  • ssists with evaluation of new tests/equipment and incorporates checkout samples into the routine    flow of work, and processes data using statistical programs
  • Develops bench assignments for a section or shift.
  • Assumes responsibility for a section in the absence of a Clinical Technologist Lead, including MLS Lead vacation
  • Utilizes interpersonal skills to resolve workflow or service-related problems
  • With delegated authority and in the absence of a MLS Lead, the MLS 2 authorizes overtime activities by technologists working in the section AND contributes to performance evaluations of technologists/technicians and meets deadlines set by supervisors.
  • Communicates necessary and appropriate information to the CTLead or Supervisor
  • Performs inventory in assigned areas, unpacks, labels and puts away supplies taking care to rotate stock as needed. Lets the MLS Lead know well in advance when any item is getting low, helps organize the storage, proper labeling of chemicals, and verifies that the records are current and complete.  AND assists the MLS Lead in ordering supplies for the section using correct forms and budget# so supplies arrive on time and to the correct location.
  • Receptive to new ideas and procedures and adapts to new routines and schedules as necessary.
  • Assists the lead in coordinating the teaching/training of new employees, medical technology students, post-doctoral fellows and residents within the section
  • Provides bedside testing on a routine or emergency basis throughout the hospital as required, if applicable.

    Accredited Bachelor's Degree in Medical Laboratory OR equivalent education/experience
    Current Medical Laboratory Scientist certification with the American Society for Clinical Pathology or equivalent certifying organization; or certification with specialty organization appropriate to the laboratory division
    Two years of experience as a Medical Laboratory Scientist 1 or equivalent experience
