The Department of Laboratory Medicine serves as a regional resource for clinical laboratory services required for patient care, research and educational programs in laboratory medicine. The Laboratory Medicine department has an outstanding opportunity for a part-time (50%), fixed duration MEDICAL LABORATORY SCIENTIST 1 OR TRAINEE. The Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) 1 or Trainee will be primarily focused applying advanced Next Generation Sequencing methods to profile mutations in cancers. We are looking for candidates capable of providing high level support for the performance of high complexity manual and automated clinical diagnostic tests in a clinical laboratory.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Perform molecular assays for diagnosis of genetic diseases and choice of therapies for cancer patients
  • Perform work with the highest standards for accuracy and precision
  • Recognize, correct, communicate and document errors when they occur
  • Understand the molecular basis of each test
  • Use knowledge to make critical judgments regarding acceptability of test results
  • Process samples for testing using DNA extractions in a clinical lab environment
  • Perform advanced molecular biology and clinical genetics assays using Next Generation DNA sequencing technology to process large numbers of samples to profile mutations in various cancers
  • Interface with lab managers, program coordinators, directors and collaborators to communicate status of clinical research studies
  • Enter results and data into computer systems and perform appropriate checks to minimize clerical errors
  • Recognize, confirm, report and document critical, abnormal or unusual results
  • Maintain competency in all tests performed in the molecular diagnosis laboratory and perform these tests as assigned
  • Calibrate, operate, troubleshoot and perform preventive maintenance to laboratory instruments and related equipment such as: automated DNA extraction systems; DNA sequencing and library preparation instrumentation; thermal cyclers for real-time and quantitative PCR amplifications; Next Generation DNA sequencers; automated liquid handling robots; spectrophotometric and fluorescent DNA quantification systems
  • Coordinate and complete multiple procedures efficiently and accurately
  • Prioritize workload in response to urgent requests. When assigned tasks are completed, assist others and/or work on special projects
  • Investigate and solve problems involving specimen collection or handling; seek assistance to solve problems when appropriate
  • Make and verify quality of reagents. Follow established procedures for labeling and storage of materials, and monitor laboratory inventory.
  • Assure quality control requirements are attained to validate test results
  • Teach, demonstrate techniques and share practical knowledge with co-workers, students, postdoctoral trainees, residents and new employees
  • Form productive working relationships with coworkers
  • Accept direction of supervisory personnel and request clarification of duties and expectations as appropriate
  • Support service and Laboratory Medicine goals, service efficiency, and effectiveness through such activities as: participating in problem solving, demonstrating support for policies, sharing expertise, and contributing to project work and committees
  • Demonstrate a courteous, respectful, professional attitude, and behavior at all times
  • Be aware of compliance and billing issues and follow acceptable laboratory policies
  • Continue education through departmental case conferences, staff meetings, journal reading, workshops and related seminars as available
  • Assist in development and/or evaluation of new procedures and instruments as assigned
  • Follow all rules regarding preparation and processing of samples for transport
  • Perform related duties as required

    REQUIREMENTS:
    This position will be offered as a Medical Laboratory Scientist 1 or Medical Laboratory Scientist Trainee dependent upon the qualifications of the selected candidate.

    Requirements for MLS Trainee:
    Accredited Bachelor's Degree in Medical Laboratory Science OR equivalent education/experience
    AND
    Eligible to take the Medical Laboratory Science certification examination from the American Society for Clinical Pathology, with successful completion and certification within one year from date of hire. Failure of Medical Laboratory Science graduates to attain certification within one year of date of hire will result in a recommendation for termination.

    Requirements for MLS 1:
    Accredited Bachelor's Degree in Medical Laboratory Science OR equivalent education/experience
    AND
    Current Medical Laboratory Science certification with the American Society for Clinical Pathology or equivalent certifying organization; or certification with specialty organization appropriate to the laboratory division.
    AND
    One year of experience as a Medical Laboratory Scientist Trainee. Up to one year of on-the-job experience performing clinical testing in a Medical Laboratory Science Program externship may count towards the experience requirement.

    DESIRED:
    Experience with Next Generation Sequencing library preparation and sequencers
    Knowledge of automated liquid handlers and processes
    Experience with PCR and/or DNA sequencing primer design
