UWs Hall Health Center has an outstanding opportunity for a temporary Medical Assistant.

The person in this position assists health care professionals in the examination and treatment of ambulatory patients.


Clinic Area:
  • Keep clinical spaces and supplies orderly and ready for use.
  • Check rooms and drawers daily and stock as needed. Maintain Supplies in storage area.
  • Prepare rooms at the beginning of each day (i.e., check lights, turn on computer).
  • Close rooms at end of day: (i.e., wipe exam table, keyboard etc); put culture material into refrigerator.
  • Clean microscope once a week.
  • Stock forms and patient information materials; order materials when needed.
  • Order supplies on a weekly basis.
  • Package lab specimens and deliver them to the Lab Dept.
  • Stock eye, ear and minor procedure trays.
  • Clean toys as needed.
  • Clean procedure rooms and equipment weekly or as needed.
  • Clean diaphragms, cryotips, and other equipment as required, using proper procedure.
  • Check ultrasound cleaning solution per protocol.
  • Comply with standardized room and supply set up.

    Patient Flow:
  • Anticipate the needs of patients and clinicians.
  • Perform vital signs and initial assessment.
  • Document appropriate information in the electronic medical record (EMR).
  • Perform physical exam preliminaries, if needed.
  • Schedule appointments and arrange follow-up visits when indicated.
  • Prepare exam room according to patient visit needs.
  • Sign up patients for eCare
  • Take measures, as determined with the clinician, to keep the clinician on schedule.
  • Clearly communicate significant clinical events, abnormal findings and problems to the clinician or consulting nurse.
  • Protect each patient's dignity, safety and confidentiality; attend clinician during exam when appropriate.
  • Check electronic and phone messages every two hours at a minimum, and ensure that that request is processed before "doning" the message..
  • Attend clinician during exam when appropriate.
  • Prepare medical record for clinic visit, such as making sure recent ER notes, recent imaging and referral notes have been entered into patients EMR or obtain paper copy.

    Clinical Assistance:
  • Perform audiograms, tympanograms, visual acuity, EKG and spirometry tests, and ear washes per clinician's request.
  • Assist with procedures and exams when needed.
  • Administer injections (within the state requirements for certification).
  • Transport patients to other areas in Hall Health Center as needed.
  • Arrange for patient transportation to ER when needed.
  • Participate and comply with the "Point of Care" Competency Program.
  • Set up for and clean up after procedures as needed.
  • Fit patient with DME when ordered by provider, making sure necessary paperwork is completed.

    Diagnostic Test Result Information
  • Return patient calls regarding laboratory test results per provider instructions. Document appropriate notation in chart.
  • Mail lab result letters to patients.
  • Recognize and report to clinician or consulting nurse abnormal laboratory values and radiology reports.
  • Call outside providers for diagnostic tests or other information pertaining to patient, or access electronically.
  • Monitor overdue results via EPIC and investigate overdue imaging and referral orders.
  • Abstract imaging and referral results from UW Mindscape to the patient's EPIC record.
  • Send reminder notice for follow up care as needed.

    Prescription Refill
  • Obtain prescription refill requests via phone, ecare, fax or from patients presenting in person.
  • Document the request in the electronic medical record and forward to the provider.
  • If the patient has remaining refills, notify patient to contact pharmacy directly.

  • Check work email at least daily.
  • Check and document Child Profile for every patient.
  • Participate in team or unit meetings.
  • Contribute to Quality Management and other HHC programs.
  • Maintain accreditation or licensure as required by state law (participate in continuing education).
  • Maintain flexibility toward accepting varied team responsibilities.
  • Perform other work as assigned and maintain flexibility toward accepting varied team responsibilities.
  • Float as needed to all HHC units.
  • Comply with privacy and confidentiality rules as required by State and Federal laws.
  • Demonstrates behaviors that support the UW Medicine Patient's Are First Service Guidelines.

    Completion of a Medical Assistant course accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) or Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES) or other recognized regional or national accreditation board; OR equivalent education/experience.

    Recent experience providing direct patient care in an ambulatory or emergency medicine department/acute care setting. Demonstrates competency in obtaining accurate vital signs and other physical assessment/treatment skills within the scope of the MA. Demonstrates knowledge of normal versus abnormal clinical events and findings. Demonstrates consistent, accurate, and timely follow-through when processing patient requests and executing provider orders. Knowledge of current infection control standards and practices. Communicates effectively with individuals and groups. Contributes to positive working relationships with other members of the health care team. Applies customer service skills when interacting with clients. Practices in accordance with ethical, legal and organizational framework that ensures the patient's interests and well-being are met. Maintains patient confidentiality, respects cultural, economic, and ethnic and lifestyle differences of patients, visitors and staff. Accepts personal responsibility for maintaining and improving knowledge and skills necessary to the MA role. Demonstrates basic computer knowledge and keyboarding skills. Able to work independently and collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams. Demonstrates excellent organizational skills. Able and willing to work flexible schedule to maintain level of service.

    Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except where there are legal requirements such as license/certification/registration.

  • Experience with public contact with diverse clientele.
  • Familiarity with electronic medical record systems, preferably EPIC.
  • Familiarity with pediatric and sports medicine outpatient clinical care.
  • Familiarity with front offices processes such as registration, clinic check-in and scheduling of appointments.
