The HMC Edward Thomas House Medical Respite has an outstanding opportunity for a temporary/hourly MEDICAL ASSISTANT. The Edward Thomas House Medical Respite is a unique medical respite harm reduction program that provides shelter care with embedded nursing, mental health, and case management services to an at-risk homeless population. Medical Respite is a part of the Healthcare for the Homeless Network and is supported by funds from multiple sources including King County Public Health, MIDD, and local hospitals. The Edward Thomas House admits patients referred from all King County area hospitals 7 days a week and operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The program is operated by Harborview Medical Center (HMC) at an off-site location next to the Harborview emergency department.

Under general supervision, the Medical Assistant (MA) will assist the medical and nursing staff by performing delegated tasks that involve direct patient care; technical procedures or monitoring that may be invasive and require skills validations; transportation of patients, supplies and specimens; ordering and stocking of supplies; and maintenance of special equipment, including sterile equipment and set-ups. The MA role may include coordinating the clerical activities and supporting the front desk activities for patient care in the clinic. Participates in clinic and selected divisional activities to promote effective problem solving and communication.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
CLINIC FLOW ACTIVITIES
  • Ensure exam rooms are stocked, clean and ready for patients
  • Maintain and use supplies and equipment in a cost-effective manner
  • Prepare medical record for clinic visit. Verify presence of medical records and diagnostic testing (lab work and images) prior to scheduled appointments, requesting existing records and x-rays as necessary
  • Assist provider by facilitating use of technology including EMR (electronic medical records) and PACS (electronic imaging)
  • Coordinate communication flow in the clinic including answering and directing telephone inquiries to the appropriate individual
  • Provide basic telephone screening per clinic protocols and recognize emergent/urgent problems and direct to the nurse or physician
  • Coordinate clerical patient care activities and/or specialized technical duties unique to the assigned clinic to ensure accurate and expedited patient check-in and discharge, including obtaining consents for care and referral information
  • Take initiative to maintain patient flow for assigned providers/team
  • Transport patients and lab specimens
  • Complete billing documents as appropriate
  • Schedule appointments for patients

    PATIENT CARE ACTIVITIES
  • Prepare patient for examination by the provider. Observe and document the patients physical and emotional condition and vital signs in the medical record, recognize and report symptoms of common medical illnesses to physician or nurse
  • Perform delegated patient care activities/education in accordance with established standards of practice
  • Assist during patient examinations and procedures performed by health care professionals
  • Perform procedures including ear irrigation, urethral catheterization, and sterile dressing changes
  • Will withdraw venous blood and capillary blood
  • Will give injectable medications that have been registered with the WA State Department of Health
  • Respite care serves a more concentrated Safety Net population - all patients in this unit are homeless
  • Unique duties include milieu management (interacting with patients and redirecting)
  • Food handling for serving meals that are catered to Respite

    CUSTOMER SERVICE AND TEAM BEHAVIORS 
  • Greet patients and families
  • Review patient needs with providers daily, preferably at the start of each day or session
  • Advocate for the patient/family by locating appropriate staff to address concerns
  • Appropriately directs patients and others to other departments across the medical center
  • Demonstrate an atmosphere/attitude of respect for human dignity and the uniqueness of each person encountered in the clinic setting
  • Promote and protect general safety for patients/families/friends and co-workers through adherence to correct procedures, timely communication of messages and test results, and appropriate consultation
  • Act promptly and effectively during an emergency situation
  • Maintain/improve own professional competence, knowledge and skills to meet identified self-learning needs and annual review requirements
  • Apply appropriate policies, procedures, protocols, and standards of practice in performing duties
  • Support development of clinic and divisional efficiency and effectiveness through participation in quality assessment and improvement activities
  • Demonstrate support for clinic and divisional policies and procedures
  • Promote and contribute to the development of team in clinic and working relationships between the clinic and other departments/disciplines
  • Participate in orientation of new staff and preceptorship of MA students
  • Other duties as assigned

    REQUIREMENTS:
    Completion of a Medical Assistant course accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) or Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES) or other recognized regional or national accreditation board;
    OR
    equivalent education/experience.

    Legal Requirement:
    Must be Washington State Medical Assistant-Certified or achieve this designation during the probationary period. Failure to achieve and/or maintain this designation will result in termination of employment.

    ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENT:
    Valid BLS/CPR Card
