The UWMC General Internal Medicine Clinic has an outstanding opportunity for a full-time, fixed-term MEDICAL ASSISTANT. Medical Assistants (MAs) in the General Internal Medicine Center perform duties to assist our healthcare professionals in the examination and treatment of patients and family: conduct basic diagnostic tests, provide patient care coordination and education, and clinical/reception functions. They will also communicate with physicians and team members about patients' medical conditions, including symptoms and results of diagnostic tests, as well as follow-up as directed by the provider.    


  • Prepare paperwork and medical record for clinic visit. Verify  presence of medical records and diagnostic testing (lab work and images) prior to scheduled appointments, request existing records and x-rays as necessary
  • Prepare exam rooms for patient care, assuring that rooms are cleaned, organized and stocked before each patient visit
  • Properly identify patients prior to rooming, performing  procedures, injections, etc.
  • Prepare patient for examination by the provider. Observe and document the patients physical and emotional condition and vital signs in the medical record, recognize and report symptoms of common medical illnesses to physician or nurse
  • Perform procedures including ear irrigation, dressing changes, immunization administration, bladder scans, basic laboratory examinations, venipuncture, and 12-lead electrocardiogram including, but not limited to, rhythm strips, pregnancy testing, and throat cultures, as ordered by provider. Notify RN of orders that cannot be done by medical assistant
  • Inform provider of test results. Follow clinic-specific procedures related to test follow-up and patient notification
  • Assist during patient examination and procedures performed by health care professionals; monitor patient condition following procedures
  • Monitor patient flow in clinic to assure efficient clinic operations
  • Assist other Medical Assistants as necessary

  • Provide basic telephone screening per clinic protocols and recognize emergent/urgent problems and direct to the nurse or physician
  • Schedule new and return appointments, consultations and procedures including ancillary appointments and procedures
  • Coordinate clerical patient care activities and/or specialized technical duties unique to the assigned clinic to ensure accurate and expedited patient check-in and discharge, including obtaining consents for care and referral information
  • Transport patients and lab specimens
  • Complete and submit billing documents in a timely manner, according to clinic policy
  • Maintain infection control standards, including hand hygiene and appropriate use of personal protective attire
  • Demonstrate proficiency in use of scheduling and electronic medical record systems

  • Warmly greet patients, families and staff
  • Appropriately direct patients and others to other departments across the medical center
  • Advocate for the patient/family by locating appropriate staff to address concerns
  • Promote and protect general safety for patients/families/friends and co-workers through adherence to correct procedures, timely communication of messages and test results, and appropriate consultation
  • Act promptly and effectively during an emergency situation, according to established protocol
  • Maintain/improve own professional competence, knowledge and skills to meet identified self-learning needs and annual review requirements
  • Maintain knowledge of clinic and hospital  policies, procedures, protocols, and standards of practice and apply these in performing duties
  • Responsible for maintaining compliance re: TB testing, flu vaccine and respiratory mask fitting
  • Complete annual competencies
  • Promote and contribute to the development of team in both clinic and working relationships between the clinic and other departments/disciplines
  • Support development of clinic and divisional efficiency and effectiveness through participation in quality assessment and improvement activities
  • Demonstrate an atmosphere/attitude of respect for human dignity and the uniqueness of each person encountered in the clinic setting
  • Demonstrate support for clinic and divisional policies and procedures
  • Participate in orientation of new staff and preceptorship of MA students
  • Perform related duties as assigned/required

    Completion of a Medical Assistant course accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) or Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES) or other recognized regional or national accreditation board;
    equivalent education/experience.

    Legal Requirement:
    Must be Washington State Medical Assistant-Certified or achieve this designation during the probationary period. Failure to achieve and/or maintain this designation will result in termination of employment.
