The UWMC Emergency Department has outstanding opportunities for full-time MEDICAL ASSISTANTS (variable shifts). The individual in this position performs duties to assist and support other health care professionals (RN, ARNP, MD) in the evaluation and treatment of emergency department patients. As a member of the health care team, the Medical Assistant (MA) provides ongoing communication with other emergency staff regarding patient concerns and clinical condition as needed and helps to maintain an environment that respects cultural, economic, ethnic and lifestyle differences. Competitive candidates will have completed a Medical Assistant training program, have experience providing direct patient care in an emergency department or as an EMT, and exhibit clear and concise communications skills, both verbal and written.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
CLINIC FLOW ACTIVITIES
  • Ensure procedure/clinic rooms are stocked, clean and ready for patients
  • Maintain and use supplies and equipment in a cost-effective manner
  • Assist provider by facilitating use of technology including EMR (electronic medical records) and Endoworks(electronic imaging)
  • Coordinate clerical patient care activities and/or specialized technical duties unique to the assigned clinic to ensure accurate and expedited patient check-in and discharge
  • Take initiative to maintain patient flow for assigned providers/team.
  • Transport patients and lab specimens

    PATIENT CARE ACTIVITIES
  • Perform some direct patient care such as wound irrigation, diagnostic testing (ECG, venipuncture), crutch walking/teaching
  • Prepare patient for examination by the provider. Observe and document the patient’s physical and emotional condition and vital signs in the medical record, recognize and report symptoms of common medical illnesses to physician or nurse
  • Perform delegated patient care activities/education in accordance with established standards of practice
  • Assist during patient examinations and procedures performed by health care professionals
  • May withdraw venous blood and capillary blood
  • May give injectable medications that have been registered with the WA State Department of Health

    CUSTOMER SERVICE AND TEAM BEHAVIORS
  • Greet patients and families
  • Review patient needs with providers daily, preferably at the start of each day or session
  • Advocate for the patient/family by locating appropriate staff to address concerns
  • Appropriately directs patients and others to other departments across the medical center
  • Demonstrate an atmosphere/attitude of respect for human dignity and the uniqueness of each person encountered in the clinic setting
  • Promote and protect general safety for patients/families/friends and co-workers through adherence to correct procedures, timely communication of messages and test results, and appropriate consultation
  • Act promptly and effectively during an emergency situation
  • Maintain/improve own professional competence, knowledge and skills to meet identified self-learning needs and annual review requirements
  • Apply appropriate policies, procedures, protocols, and standards of practice in performing duties
  • Support development of clinic and divisional efficiency and effectiveness through participation in quality assessment and improvement activities
  • Demonstrate support for clinic and divisional policies and procedures
  • Promote and contribute to the development of team in clinic and working relationships between the clinic and other departments/disciplines
  • Participate in orientation of new staff and preceptorship of MA students
  • Other duties as assigned

    REQUIREMENTS:
    Completion of a Medical Assistant course accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) or Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES) or other recognized regional or national accreditation board;
    OR
    equivalent education/experience.

    Legal Requirement:
    Must be Washington State Medical Assistant-Certified or achieve this designation during the probationary period. Failure to achieve and/or maintain this designation will result in termination of employment.
