The UWMC Diabetes Care Center has an outstanding opportunity for a full-time MEDICAL ASSISTANT. Medical Assistants (MAs) perform duties to assist health care professionals in the examination and treatment of patients. As a member of the health care team, the MA helps to create a culture of professional excellence and helps to maintain an environment that respects cultural, economic, ethnic, and lifestyle differences of patients and staff. 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

CLINIC FLOW
  • Monitor and manage the flow of patients in the clinic throughout the day
  • Demonstrate the ability to be organized and effectively prioritize work tasks for the needs of the clinic

    PATIENT CARE PROCEDURES
  • Perform direct patient care procedures according to level of education, certification, and clinic protocol, including: device downloading on every patient and sometimes multiple devices (insulin pump, glucose meters), occasionally drawing blood
  • Provide skilled assistance to providers performing patient care procedures in the clinic
  • Perform patient device downloads

    PATIENT SPECIFIC CARE
  • Perform vitals on all patients
  • Provide accurate, appropriate, and culturally sensitive education to clinic patients
  • Perform patient care responsibilities considering needs specific to the standard of care for patients age

    PATIENT CARE - SAFETY
  • Maintain infection control standards including hand hygiene and appropriate use of personal protective attire
  • Respond appropriately to patients in physical distress or emergency situations

    COORDINATION OF CARE
  • Assist providers and RNs in the maintenance of clinic processes to ensure timely follow-up on reported test results
  • Assist with coordination of care including clarifying patient follow-up and scheduling patient appointments

    DOCUMENTATION
  • Accurately and thoroughly document provision of patient care in a timely manner
  • Maintain, complete, and submit required clinic reports and audits in a timely manner

    BILLING PRACTICES
  • Demonstrate general understanding of billing practices

    RECEPTION/APPOINTMENT SCHEDULING
  • Employ excellent customer service skills
  • Schedule appointment consistent with patient needs and clinic guidelines
  • May accept and process co-pays
  • Verify insurance electronically

    TELEPHONE SUPPORT
  • Answer telephone in a professional, courteous, and efficient manner according to UWMC telephone service standards; directs calls as appropriate
  • Gather information on the telephone regarding nature of patient concern; triage appropriately; may create telephone encounter in EpicCare
  • Communicate information about medical center programs to patients, referral agencies/providers, departments, and communities
  • Communicate basic information to patient such as insurance, parking, driving directions, etc.

    EPICCARE
  • Manage referral queue
  • Manage in-baskets
  • Document patient care as performed

    GENERAL DUTIES
  • Performs administrative duties as required by clinic needs
  • Assist in orientating and training new staff
  • Review email daily to stay current with clinic communication
  • Maintain the physical environment for infection control and safety of staff and patients and for aesthetic presentation of the area (for example, organizing the waiting room furniture and magazine area)
  • Respond to facility and environmental emergencies according to established procedureS
  • Inventory and order office supplies, clinic supplies, forms
  • Sort and distribute faxes and mail on a daily basis
  • Ensure daily functioning of office equipment
  • Utilize on-line resources as required according to clinic practice and within University guidelines
  • Perform other related duties as required

    REQUIREMENTS:
    Completion of a Medical Assistant course accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) or Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES) or other recognized regional or national accreditation board;
    OR
    equivalent education/experience.

    Legal Requirement:
    Must be Washington State Medical Assistant-Certified or achieve this designation during the probationary period. Failure to achieve and/or maintain this designation will result in termination of employment.  

    ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENT:
    Valid BLS/CPR Card
