The UWMC Dermatology Clinic has an outstanding opportunity for a temporary/hourly MEDICAL ASSISTANT. Under general supervision, the Medical Assistant (MA) performs duties to assist health care professionals in the examination and treatment of patients. In addition, the Medical Assistant communicates with physicians and team members about patients clinical condition, including symptoms and results of diagnostic tests. They complete follow-up as directed by the provider. As a member of the health care team the Medical Assistant helps to create a culture of professional excellence and helps to maintain an environment that respects cultural, economic, ethnic and lifestyle differences of patients and staff.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

CLINIC FLOW
  • Ensures exam/procedure rooms are stocked, clean and ready for patients. Maintains and uses supplies and equipment in a cost-effective manner
  • Prepares the electronic medical record (EMR) for the clinic visit, as per UWMC policies and procedures. Verifies the presence of needed medical records, pathology and photos prior to scheduled appointments
  • Maintains sterile technique during Mohs and excision surgeries, as indicated
  • Cleans all equipment, furniture between patients and prepares re- usable tools/supplies for re-sterilization for central processing

    PATIENT CARE ACTIVITIES
  • Prepares the patient for surgery/examination by the provider
  • Observes and documents the patients physical and emotional condition and vital signs in the EMR
  • Recognizes and reports symptoms of common medical illness to the physician or nurse 
  • Performs delegated patient care activities/education in accordance with established standards of practice
  • Assists during patient examinations and procedures performed by health care professionals
  • Provides skilled assistance to providers performing patient care procedures such as but not limited to skin excisions, Mohs surgeries and closures
  • Performs simple dressing changes, suture removal, and assists in sterile dressing changes
  • Demonstrates the ability to be organized and effectively prioritizes work tasks for the needs of the clinic

  • Performs direct patient care procedures according to their level of education, certification, and clinic protocol
  • Provides accurate, appropriate, and culturally sensitive education to clinic patients
  • Performs patient care responsibilities considering needs specific to the standard of care for patients age
  • Demonstrate an atmosphere/attitude of respect for human dignity and the uniqueness of each person encountered in the clinic setting
  • Promotes and protects general safety for patients/families/friends and co-workers through adherence to correct procedures, timely communication of messages and test results, and appropriate consultation
  • Acts promptly and effectively during an emergency situation
  • Maintains/improves own professional competence, knowledge and skills to meet identified self-learning needs and annual review requirements
  • Applies appropriate policies, procedures, protocols, and standards of practice in performing duties
  • Supports development of clinic and divisional efficiency and effectiveness through participation in quality assessment and improvement activities
  • Demonstrates support for clinic and divisional policies and procedures
  • Promotes and contributes to the development of team in clinic and working relationships between the clinic and other departments/disciplines
  • Participates in orientation of new staff and preceptorship of MA students
  • Other duties as assigned

    REQUIREMENTS:
    Completion of a Medical Assistant course accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) or Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES) or other recognized regional or national accreditation board;
    OR
    equivalent education/experience.

    Legal Requirement:
    Must be Washington State Medical Assistant-Certified or achieve this designation during the probationary period. Failure to achieve and/or maintain this designation will result in termination of employment
