POSITION SUMMARY:

The position consists of work performed as a Marine Mechanic A aboard a vessel and work performed as a shore side machinist / welder. Works under the direction of the Boat Captain and Marine Systems Supervisor.

A Marine Mechanic A performs preventive and corrective maintenance tasks on shore side and vessel equipment and operates fuel tanker trucks, CAT-1 cranes, forklifts and machine shop equipment.

A Marine Welder performs welding (MIG, TIG, oxy-acetylene and stick), brazing and silver soldering at the Journeyman level, maintains and repairs equipment, fabricates parts and manages stock of materials.

MAJOR JOB ACTIVITIES:

  • Performs repairs and approved modifications to power plant and other electromechanical systems associated with marine vessels.      
  • Performs periodic inspections and maintenance tasks in accordance with company maintenance procedures and/or OEM guidelines.
  • Maintains engine room logs in accordance with the vessel Operating Instructions.
  • Maintains engine room of assigned vessel in a clean and orderly manner.
  • Replenishes fuel and water tanks when necessary to meet operational requirements.        
  • Operates fuel tanker trucks, CAT-1 crane and machine shop equipment (i.e. welding equipment, plasma cutter, lathe, mill, drill press, grinders, band saws, sand blaster, etc.). 
  • Performs duties as the Marine Systems welder performing MIG, TIG, gas and stick welding, brazing and silver soldering at the Journeyman level. 
  • Maintains and repairs equipment, fabricates parts and maintains inventory of stock materials. 
  • Performs duties as a hazardous material (HAZMAT) custodian to transport, issue, and store HAZMAT materials in compliance with federal, state, and local regulations. 
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

    Working Environment:

    • Works in the shore side machine shop and aboard vessels (both in port and at sea)

      Physical Activities:

      • Must be able to climb shipboard ladders and work in confined shipboard compartments.
      • Must be able to swim and be in good physical condition. 
      • Must be able to lift over 50lbs (2 personnel required).  

        Environment:

        • Must be able to lift, push or pull, carry, install and remove electronics equipment and peripherals up to 50 lbs. (two-men assist).
        • Physical elements include continuous walking or standing, crawling, kneeling or cramped, work requiring repeated stooping, and work requiring repeated or frequent stair climbing.
        • Environmental includes customer contact, extended workday, confined work area, field assignment and inclement weather.

          Qualifications:

          Education:  2-Year Technical School or equivalent training

          • Valid State of Hawaii Mechanic’s License with ASE diesel endorsement or minimum 4 years’ experience working aboard MPC-type vessel with similar engines required
          • Journeyman Welder
          • Navy Certified Welder desirable
          • State of Hawaii commercial driver’s license (CDL) with hazardous/tanker endorsement or ability to acquire
          • CAT-1 crane operator a plus
          • USCG Designated Duty Engineer Near Coastal 4,000hp credential a plus
          • USCG Able Seaman credential a plus

            Experience:

            • Five years of experience in marine mechanic position or related field
            • Knowledgeable in repair/overhaul of diesel engines, generators and hydraulic systems.
            • Experience with machine shop equipment (i.e. welding equipment, plasma cutter, lathe, mill, drill press, grinders, band saws, sand blaster, etc.).
            • Knowledge of welding techniques equivalent to a Journeyman Welder.
            • Experience with welding aluminum.

              SECURITY CLEARANCE:

              Secret security clearance is required. Applicants selected either must currently possess a Secret clearance or will be subject to a Government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements to obtain clearance prior to commencement of employment, and maintain a security clearance for access to classified information or Closed/Restricted Areas throughout duration of employment.
