The Washington National Primate Center has an outstanding opportunity for a Manager Of Program Operations.  

The primary purpose of this position is to support outstanding biomedical research directed towards significant human health issues and nonhuman primate (NHP) health and biology.  In conjunction with our Mission Statement, these values link this position to our purpose as a Center:

This position is a high level position supervising a team of research scientists providing clinical care to research animals. This position will focus on supporting the needs of principal investigators whose research contributes to the development of non-human primate disease models to advance knowledge and improve the health of both humans and animals. Additionally, this position will support the needs of the clinical team including daily operations and supervision of a team of Research Scientists providing clinical care and research support to research animals.

Position Duties and Responsibilities
This position will manage all aspects of scheduling clinical activities and facilitate vital communication between the Veterinarians, Researchers, and Research Scientists caring for animals. The employee in this position will ensure that procedures and daily activities are performed properly, on time, and in accordance with associated protocol and regulatory requirements. Not only will this person provide support via clinical care of experimentally manipulated animals, they will also provide technical support for actual experimental procedures. Additionally, this person will supervise, schedule, and define roles and responsibilities for the team. This position will hire and train new staff, oversee data management, and provide high level oversight of care required for animals on multiple projects. The position provides technical support during sample collections. Additionally, this person will manage inventory and procurement for the department.


Supervise Research Scientists (30%)
Hold quarterly meetings with upper management and all employees on Clinical Veterinary Services team, coordinate weekly rounds meeting, and schedule additional meetings, as needed.
Manage leave calendar of team and generate and post On-Call schedule for Vets, Anesthetists, Research Scientists, and Pathologists.
Review and approve time sheets twice each month.
Conduct yearly reviews of all employees.
Facilitate communications among veterinarians and research scientists (clinical and research).

Manage Inventory of Medications and Supplies, finance, and purchasing (25%)
Maintain purchasing system for clinical supplies and manage standard inventory across all treatment rooms at all facilities.
Ensure materials are received, communicate with finance about standing orders, and field questions about supplies.
Manage inventory of controlled drugs and return expired drugs to reverse distributor.
Oversee monthly inventory of drugs to check for expired drugs.
Purchase and oversee purchasing of medications, supplies, and equipment for clinical team. Communicate with CSS and Primate Center finance regarding purchases and budget.

Clinical Animal Care and Procedures (25%)
Manage and perform clinical surveillance, treatment, minor surgical procedures, and specimen collections of research animals.

Scheduling (15%)
Schedule semi-annual health screening, incoming and outgoing animal shipment processing with external collaborators and internal employees.
Schedule daily tasks for employees and manage schedule of both scheduled and unanticipated events.
Ensure full coverage in the event of employee absences or clinical emergencies.

Other Assignments 5%
Communicate and coordinate with husbandry, behavior management, and research support staff regarding animal care plans.
Perform special projects in support of the veterinary care program as needed.
Other duties as assigned.

Physical ability to do required work including lifting up to 50 lbs.
Ability to communicate effectively (speaks, reads and writes in English).
Ability to work well independently and in teams.
Detail oriented in record keeping.
Ability to follow directions. 
Six to eight years of experience with non-human primates in a research setting.
Bachelors degree in an applicable field or equivalent experience
Supervisory experience
Experience performing veterinary technical procedures
Ability to work with minimal supervision in an environment with constantly shifting and occasionally conflicting priorities.
Proficiency calculating drugs, formulations, dilutions
Ability to generate and maintain accurate, detailed records using appropriate medical language.
Familiar with regulatory agencies governing the use of animals in a laboratory setting.

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.

Certified to administration of anesthesia to NHPs

This position may be scheduled to work after hours, weekends, and holidays

Terms and Conditions for Employment
Adhere to the WaNPRC Environmental Enhancement Plan requirements for NHPs.
   - Participate in the Behavioral Management and Positive Reinforcement Animal Training Programs.
   - Develop a working knowledge of classical and operant conditioning principles and how they apply to handling animals in a research environment, with positive reinforcement as the preferred form of training.
   - Develop a working knowledge of non-human primate behavior.
Adhere to all regulations regarding humane care and use of laboratory animals.
Adhere to all WaNPRC policies and SOPs regarding animal care.
   - Recognize the importance of animal husbandry in maintaining animal health.
   - Be comfortable communicating animal-related concerns to veterinary staff.

Employment is contingent upon successful completion of health assessment at the UW's Employee Health Clinic.  The health assessment may include but is not limited to tuberculosis clearance, measles clearance, immunizations such as tetanus and vaccinia, physical exam and/or review of work health history, x-rays, and/or assessment to wear positive or negative respiratory protective equipment.  These health assessments will be repeated periodically during work assignment.

This position may be required to work with and take specific precautions against and/or be immunized against potentially infectious agents.  Specific precautions may include wearing respirators and/or protective clothing. Employee is personally responsible for following health & safety and security policies/procedures, and staying current on all required training.  Bloodborne pathogen training and compliance with all WaNPRC and UW security policies is also mandatory.  This position involves handling nonhuman primates and human pathogenic organisms.  The ability to work in an ABSL-3 containment facility may be required.

Due to the nature of this professional position and the complexities inherent in an academic, multi-site environment, typical hours exceed 40 hours and depend upon current priorities and activities.
